Not unusual at all, unfortunately.

That would be the return of the 0730 Cardiff to Portsmouth, which was a pair of 150s (150249 and 150219). I imagine the unit on the return was 150219, as 150249 would have been left at Temple Meads on the outbound working. Of course, 150219 is the newly modified DMU. Didn't get a close look at it as I caught the 7.25 Paddington from Cardiff when I saw a pair of 150s on the 0730!

For some reason I screenshotted this when I noticed it on Journeycheck in the morning :o (was checking for issues from Southall)

07:30 Cardiff Central to Portsmouth Harbour due 10:54

Will be formed of 4 coaches instead of 5 between Cardiff Central and Bristol Temple Meads.

Additional Facilities Information:
Will be formed of 4 coaches instead of 3 between Bristol Temple Meads and Westbury.
Will be formed of 2 coaches instead of 3 between Westbury and Portsmouth Harbour.
This is due to an earlier train fault.

Indeed, it is sadly not uncommon at all. I saw at least 2 Portsmouth diagrams on Saturday being run with 150s, one by a 150/9 and another by a 150/2. Unfortunate that the 150 with the least capacity (150219) ended up on a Portsmouth run today! Does anyone know why it was delayed? 150s don't usually lose too much time on the route *uncomfortable flashbacks when 150002 ended up on the route and was delayed every journey  *

Would this eventually end up working the 22.21 departure from Bath Spa (originated from Cardiff) to Westbury as the announcements said it was formed of 2 coaches, and then a three car 158 arrived. If so its fault was probably rectified and was put on the diagram so it'd end up in the right place for tomorrow morning.

Ah I didn't see journey check! Looks as if it detached at Westbury then! And indeed 150219 does have the least capacity with the disabled toilet. However, I'm glad a 150/2 was sourced as opposed to a 150/1.

As for the 2221 Bath to Westbury, this is the 158 diagram on the Cardiff to Taunton route (0841 Weston-s-Mare to Cardiff, 1100 Cardiff to Taunton, 1307 Taunton to Cardiff, 1600 Cardiff to Taunton, 1808 Taunton to Cardiff and 2100 Cardiff to Westbury).

Thanks for this!

Does anyone know if the 158 (158959) is still out of service following the fatality at Keynsham? Or is it running as a 2 car unit? I haven't seen it since.

No worries.

Haven't seen 158959 for ages, so I would guess yes it is out of service, hence why there are a lot of 150s on the Cardiff to Portsmouth services.

In fact, 0730 Cardiff to Portsmouth this morning is 153377+150925!

The 07:30 Cardiff to Portsmouth passes my flat in Fareham around 10:30 will look out for that, thanks for the gen, if the 153 is still on it at Fareham and not detatched at Bristol or Westbury then I'm sure a 153 over here is quite rare. Happy to be corrected on that point though.

153s aren't cleared past Southampton so you won't see it unfortunately; 153377 was detached at Temple Meads so it'll just be 150925 you'll see!

158959 has been out until last week when it suffered severe damage after being involved in a fatality and appears to be a Works job. What has been spread about is that the good end car of 959 is going to be attached to 158766 later this week (fresh off C4) and form a 3 Car Set numbered 158962.

Appears the 150 Bristol detacher went through to Westbury perhaps due to reduced capacity. No hurry because it only goes on to PM after arrival at Bristol TM anyway,

Is there a possibility that the 150/1s could be refurbished to the same interior as the 150/2s? I don't like the layout of the 150/1s and think they are only suitable on Avonmouth and Weston services.

Doesn't sound like they are going to be with FGW after the Turbos head west so I doubt FGW will do anything to them. I do agree with you though, a 150/1 turns up on the 08:23 Southampton - Great Malvern - Weymouth diagram more often than not. Not really ideal...

The seating in the FGW 150/1s can not be altered from 3+2 to 2+2 because when they came to FGW in 2011 the DFT Bean Counters said that xxx number of additional seats are being provided meaning that this was set in stone. Fortunately losing them in the future as electrification cascades come through.

Thank heavens for that. I think their seating arrangement is utterly vile and I had the misfortune of enduring 150101 yesterday on the 1200 Cardiff to Taunton. My back went stiff when I got off at Filton Abbey Wood - surely that cannot be acceptable? (and before some smart git pipes up - it wasn't down to my own actions, it was because of the seats on the train!)

You're not alone with that problem. I had the misfortune to ride a cl-150 from Hereford to New Street last week and found the seats very uncomfortable (as well as the engine very loud) to the extent that had the train called at Barnt Green, I would have transferred onto the Cross City line to spare my back (and ears) from further punishment

Although the seating can get cozy on the 150/1s, I actually prefer them to the 150/2s. Granted, 150/2s are better for long journeys for many reasons but my knee caps get crushed against the seat in front when at an airline seat/ keep knocking the person I'm sitting opposite at a table when on the 150/2s. :(

The new led lighting though a benefit looks very flimsy and on the cheap

Some units have mismatched floors where the vinyl has been replaced

They were last refreshed in around 2005 but i find it laughable the white shade is used where the doors are as shows up dirt the most ! The green isn't too bad and I think the toilets are better than the small ones on a 158 still with original floor tap controls

A quick update on this.

The reshuffling has taken place and the FGW 158 formations are now as follows:

158749: 52778(ex 158959) + 57749(ex 158960)

158769: 52769(ex 158960) + 57769(ex 158960)....so 158769 reformed to original 2 car unit

158962: 52746(ex 158959) + 52766(ex 158766) + 57766(ex 158766)

158960 at the moment no longer exists.
