Hello all,

I'm making a leisure trip from Loughborough to Cardiff tomorrow, returning next day on Friday. Excluding Advance fares, I'm looking for the cheapest possible way of doing this journey by rail. I'm happy to go via London or via Birmingham and travelling (super) off peak.

I'm already covered for the Underground and can use any walkup ticket type. £72.40 for the through SVR is the price to beat.

Any split ticketing or creative fare suggestions especially welcome, TIA :)

So that is £18.10 with Priv, I got it down to £17.10 with splits at Birmingham New Street and Gloucester (using a XC from Nottingham or Derby would be your best bet I think)

Start with the 0940 LBO to Derby then change at 1002 for a 35 min wait for the 1037 to CDF arriving 1329, I'll see if someone else can do something better via London.

Fare goes down to £14.80 return if you travel via Hereford and buy

LOUGHBOROUGH to BIRMINGHAM STATIONS OFF-PEAK R Return £5.00
BIRMINGHAM STATIONS to CWMBRAN OFF-PEAK R Return £5.80 Route: VIA WORCESTER .
CWMBRAN to CARDIFF CENTRAL ANYTIME DAY S Single £2.00
CARDIFF CENTRAL to CWMBRAN ANYTIME DAY S Single £2.00

Edit: Had you been travelling to Newport, you could have avoided the last two tickets by going via Worcester and Cheltenham then stopping short at Newport.

Thank you for your suggestions :)

I didn't make the trip in the end, but might do so in the near future. Going via Hereford is an interesting option, but there's a time penalty involved. Are those 175s furnished with plug sockets yet?

No, 175s do not have plug sockets, unfortunately.
