I don't know much about the history or withdrawal details of these locos, but as a picture can paint a thousand words, here's a selection (Please note that none of these are my own):

08500 and 08711 at Tees Yard:

Both these locos have been stored out in the open at Tees Yard for number of years in this stripped condition.

These two locos were prepared for use by DB Schenkers' subsidiary Euro Cargo Rail for use in Rouen, France, as recently as 2009.

The loco has been stored at Wigan Springs Branch for a number of years, but in recent times has been maintained and repaired as required to allow it to potter around the depot when needed.

This loco saw regular use up until quite recently on shunting and trip workings in the Humber area.

Note that 08993 to 08995 inclusive form the entirety of the small fleet of locos which gained cut down cabs during the mid eighties for working coal trains on the Burry Port and Gwendraeth Valley line in West Wales.

Anyone know what the likely end result is? Surely some will go for scrap but 09s are always useful on Heritage Railways thanks to their ability to work service trains at 25mph if needed...

I will add :- that means the 08s are slower than 25mph so don't plan on using them on the mainline or sending them on long journeys to a yard unless you do not mind cluttering up said mainline for hours. The 09s have the higher top speed of 25mph (wow !) to alleviate this problem.

as far as I understand, not without significant attention beforehand to disconnect the wheels from the engine, remove the connecting rods between the wheels etc.

Can these locomotives be hauled 'dead attached' behind other locomotives at higher speeds?
With the connecting rods removed and the traction motors demeshed, class 08s can be hauled at up to either 25mph, according to the rule book as I have seen it, or 45mph according to several unverified sources (I've seen a shot of one being hauled over the Highland main line to Inverness in the consist of an engineers' train in the eighties - surely it can't have been pathed at 25mph all the way?).

It's also worth remembering that the class was built between 52 and 62 to a modification of a design that dates back as far as 1934

I thought the 09s top speed was more like a scary 27-29mph?:lol:

09's have a top speed of 27 1/2 mph. 08's half that with double reduction gearing but twice the tractive effort. Both would be useful on Heritage lines.
They were designed on a Jinty's frame!

08s are pretty mentally powerful aren't they?

They are reasonably powerful but they do struggle with the length and weight of some modern trains. Trying to haul 25ish heavily loaded wagons can be a struggle. That said there's been nothing really that can rival them, they're great fun to drive.
