Cat Cafes

I don't know if anyone has heard about these new cafes, but I've been to three of them this year with my partner. There are currently four in the UK (London, Nottingham, Edinburgh, Brighton), and the idea is that you pay a small cover charge (around £5-£7) and you can spend an hour or so surrounded by cats, and you can buy tea and cakes to eat whilst you're there. They're really great if you love cats, especially if you're unable to own them yourself.

There's enough of us nutters who love cats (and lots of us that can't own one) that this should make the owners quite a lot of money. It's likely to be a unique idea in the locale it's set up in too, so it should attract plenty of interest. Even when you consider those who can't be around cats (allergy), those who would rather not be around cats (feartie) and those who would rather not eat food around animals (pernickety), there'll be plenty of felinophiles and, frankly, just curious patrons who'll be happy to pay for some time spent in the company of cats.

The one in Edinburgh is the one we went to earlier, and it was really good. It's called Maison de Moggy (it sounds pretentious but it's really not inside), and is currently on Hamilton Place. However they're closing on 17th May and moving to a new place on West Port. You can view more information online. Hope you like it!

I quite like cats as animal companions go, and I will probably get pets of my own in due course. But the appeal of pets to me is not just to look and see cute - that is of course a part of it, but at the end of the day you could just watch videos of cats and you'd get that. It's to have a personal and emotional connection with them (for which a cat is good, but perhaps not the best pet to have. Slightly more dynamic than our current family guinea pigs though I think!). This café idea seems cool to me, but if I were there for a few hours I'd only ever be sad it was time to leave since I'd never see any of them again!

There are some outside the UK too! We visited the one in Montpellier on our honeymoon, where you can just walk in with no pre-booking required.

Out of interest, how do they manage the moggy urge to go out wandering ? Anyone who's shared a house with one will know that confining a cat against its will will lead to extreme frustration (for cat and human). Do they just stuff the place so full of them that there's statistically likely to be a few around at any given time ?

You clearly did not meet any of our three cats over the last nine years.
Ollie went out for about 5 minutes a day if you could actually persuade him to go out the back door.
Poppy only went out if she could see her humans in the garden.
Jasper tended to go out a bit more than Ollie but generally seemed content to just sniff the evening air in the summer.

One of our neighbour's cats seems to prefer to spend more time in our house than anywhere else if he gets the chance!

Maybe it's a personality thing, but my parent's cat seems to be in and out like a fiddler's elbow a lot of the time.

After this election, I expect a lot more cats to take pity on us humans and provide us with sustenance, company,etc. David Icke got it all wrong - cats, not lizards.
