How do you touch-in at Canada Water when transferring from London Overground?

A few months ago I was travelling from Gatwick to Prince Regent via Canada Water. I had a pre-purchased paper ticket for the first leg and planned to use my Oyster for the second.

At Canada Water, I followed the signs for the Jubilee Line but couldn't see any yellow Oyster readers, only the pink one. A train was just coming in to the platform, and I continued to Prince Regent somewhat stressed that I could be had up for fare evasion even though I was willing -- in fact wanting -- to pay.

Since the signs to the Jubilee Line didn't take me through an exit, I'm not quite sure what I did wrong. There was no information on the TFL journey planner or at the station to tell me where to find a yellow Oyster reader. I had expected there would be one when entering the LU area for use of those who have not yet touched in. Is there one, and, if so, where is it? The signs to the Jubilee Line just take you up one flight of escalator and there is definitely nothing on that route that I could see. There were no staff around to ask either.

I'm not sure where you think you were, but the DLR goes nowhere near Canada Water! Maybe you meant the Overground or the Jubilee line?

RJ is correct. If changing from a paper ticket to an Oyster/Contactless card you can touch in, but not out, on the pink readers.

When I was using my Bus Operators Pass at Clapham Junction, changing from the Southern train onto the London Overground to West Brompton (then Acton Town via Earls Court on the tube), I know already the gateline doesn't work, so tried touching in on a pink reader but got an error 57 code (I think), luckily not going into Zone 1 so I could use my paper annual zone 2-6 if checked, which was only at the gateline at Acton Town. I used the sneaky shortcut at Earls Court from the District to the Piccadilly line.

With a bus operator pass it doesn't really matter if you don't touch in you can touch out as normal to complete the journey.likewise an RPI on the overground will not peanalise you for not touching in. The card reader goes orange when checking bus operator passes but that is just to remind the RPI to check photo ID. Of course if the bus operator pass is blocked or expired then you are in trouble.

More likely the OP meant Canary Wharf which fits the description (and where I've been confused in the past).

At Canary Wharf you would have to pass through a gateline to get to the DLR. I think they mean Canning Town (they like stations beginning with Can in that part of the world!)

For Gatwick to Prince Regent the only obvious Overground-to-DLR interchange I can see would be at Shadwell but that looks like two separate stations with interchange via the street. You could change to the Jubilee at Canada Water and then the DLR at Canning Town, but a paper ticket that gets you as far as Canning Town Jubilee would also be valid for the DLR leg to Prince Regent (they're both in zone 3).

Apologies for the embarrassing memory lapse! It doesn't help that I posted in the middle of the night when I was very tired.

My journey was:

London Overground from Gatwick to Canada Water
Jubilee Line to Canning Town
DLR to Prince Regent

It was the transfer from LO to the Jubilee Line that was the issue, not to the DLR. OP now corrected.

Interesting that I could have used the pink reader. The pink reader there has a sign next to it telling you not to use it for starting/ending your journey, so I presume that's out of date?

To be honest I wish it wouldn't start a journey either, because it just adds to the confusion. They do it to reduce the number of incomplete journeys, though I'm sure it creates as many when they try to end a journey.

OP, do you mean you took a National Rail train to Clapham Junction or New Cross Gate, and then a London Overground train from there to Canada Water?

Would it be simplest just to leave the station at Canada Water using the paper ticket, then come back in with your Oyster card? After all this reflects what you are actually doing with the tickets. It's a pity of course that the fares structure means that it is cheaper to do that than to buy one ticket.

London Overground is part of National Rail. (I think we can do this all day. )

But seriously I think we can summarise it as:

Overground to Canada Water
Jubilee Line to Canning Town
DLR to Prince Regent

The answer is that if there were no readers inside the gates, you need to exit the station with your paper ticket, and re-enter using Oyster PAYG.

We will always get there, one way or another, I think.
