From the WNXX forum so not sure if posted on here...

158889 has transferred to EMT and will recieve revised livery and First Class to be removed as part of a two year minimum loan

Unsure if the automated PA will be isolated

To do with improved Lincoln services

Will this just work with all of the other fleet on any random service or will it just be on the Newark/Lincoln services? Hoping it will show on anything!

Whatever they allocate it to it will need to get back to an appropriate depot to empty its CETs, presumably that alone keeps it 'different to the rest' even if they do change the interior layout.

I wonder when the EMT 158 fleet will be made fully compliant

The last refurbishment was more about the seating than anything else

I know they could have at least installed a PIS!

Mind you this was back in 2007 when everything was done on the cheap

Same year crosscountry started...

I remember EMT gained a pitiful was it one or two 153s and that was it till the 156s came all four of them,

If only the government of the day had granted unfettered access to the strategic DMU reserve, eh?

I've noticed quite a few times recently that there's been a 158+156 on a Liverpool-Nottingham working.

They actually got the ex-FNW 153s from Northern - 8 units but they lost the 158 centre cars to Northern, so the local services gained at the expense of the longer distance services.

Don't think the longer distance services suffered (in theory) - wasn't the logic of receiving more 153/156s being to displace 158s from use on less appropriate services to allow them to be doubled up between Nottingham and Liverpool? 3-car to 4-car on all services was the idea.

This often meant that busy 3-car services east of Nottingham became 2-car packed services. I used to regularly travel that way, but choose to go via London now because of the chances of getting a seat and advance ticket availability. There is a lot of supressed demand on that route caused by a lack of stock.

Well Liverpool-Norwich did suffer initially.

In 2006 a 2 car DMU running Liverpool-Norwich was a rarity, the majority were 3 and 4 car 158s/170s but you could even get 5 car 170s on some services.

Then the changes came along and the busiest Liverpool-Norwich services got 4 car 158s (west of Nottingham only), with the majority being 2 car 158s until both the EMT 158 refurbishment was complete and EMT got 4 x 156s from Northern to cascade 4 x additional 158s to Liverpool to Norwich.

I must say that into my fifth week of using EMT 4 car 158's between Dore & Oxford Road, I'm really rather happy with the service, the staff are mostly nice, the interiors are tidy and clean, the down sides are really just lack of wifi and power, but it's not the end of the world. I would however like to see carnet tickets on this service as I often travel only four days a week. Interestingly, tonight is the first time that a 4 car 156 has turned up ! Strangely old school !

Wifi and power sockets will be installed on the 158 fleet some time in the next twelve months.

It's unrelated to the drift of the original thread, but it's also worth noting that with the re-tendering of on-train catering, the trolley service on this route is planned to be extended to Peterborough in the not too distant future.

Is it the unit that was loaned to FGW I think it was?

With the automated PA won't it just be a case of deleting the SWML specific stuff and loading the stuff for the new route(s)?

It would have been 1 of many. On and off Salisbury each day so would have been changed on a daily basis

More than likely the PIS and PA will be left alone by EMT. The PIS screens themselves on board and at each end of the train are flexible with what they can display, destination wise that is, calling patterns are a different ball game. The PA however will no doubt definitely be left well alone, of which is linked in with the calling patterns - unless EMT want to spend money getting new stuff recorded.

SWT 158/159 Destination Screens have had all NON SWT destinations deleted. But have every SWT station in its Destination list. EMT would have to insert a chip that contains a standard 158 Destination list.

Not quite. The 159s may do but the 158s certainly have a lot of the ex RR/ScotRail destinations in some of them, as witnessed with Fort William or Mystery Excursion or Penzance being 2 fairly common showing on at least one of the screens. Certainly helps FGW having some of the RR destinations in them, although I don't know whether FGW has been using them.

When they do update the destination screens is it just a case of plugging in a data connection from the onboard computer to an external one and downloading the new ones required?

Something I have often wondered, but not found the answer to:

In SWT's 158s, is the First Class section the same capacity as their 159s, or down-sized to reflect the 2-car formation?

Downsized. 3 windows worth rather than 5, or thereabouts. Think 159 has 24 FC, 12 or 14 in a 158.

Soon.

USB and three pin sockets, digital displays, DDA compliant toilets and WiFi are rumoured as being fitted to the 158s and a 156 is going to have some USB sockets fitted as a trial and if successful will have USB sockets at every seat and three pins at tables.

Or so I've heard. :p

As for catering from discussions I've had with folk I was told it would be all the way through to Norwich from September, but don't quote me on that!

The 158s have now seemingly all been reprogrammed to include only the updated SWT list. The cabs all now seem to have a new list displayed, and the original codes (as per FGW's sets) no longer work.

Does Eastcroft have CET equipment, is it being installed or would the unit have to go over to Derby where I presume they have it for the 222s? To be honest I can see the retention tanks being taken off this unit temporarily as it would be so much of a pain to deal with them on just one unit.
