I was just wondering if as a trainee we get the free travel or do we have to wait until fully qualified?

Sorry if this has already been asked :p

As a trainee for most roles you should receive staff travel passes imo

Free travel applies to all staff directly employed by the TOC.

Sent from my GT-I9505 using Forum Fiend v1.3.3.

Flash your pass to most guards before boarding you shouldn't have a problem.

Aha! I missed that important info. I meant trainee driver and it's with GTR

Not sure if this as changed but under FCC

You would get free travel on their services

You would get a 75% discount on rail travel

You will get a Oyster card

You get a Residential (travel to work) on EC as far as Newark, you used to get a residential on the Midland Mainline and Southern. Southern is now GTR anyway. You may get some on the London Midland.

The Residential may have changed since the franchised changed but worth a ask.

After a year you will get international travel. I'm not sure if it's a year after you passed out or the date you started GTR.

Your partner will get the same, but I'm not sure if they will if your a trainee, something to ask.

There is a Guy in Hertford house who will put you straight, he's a really nice guy, he just deals in staff travel.

When you get sent the details of your induction at Kentish Town they will send you a temporary pass to use immediately, then once you're there they will give you the forms for the passes and for your partner and sprogs if applicable.

Just to add to Rocket's post, the International FIP is available after 1 years service, but the privilege rate Oyster will probably go in July so you won't see the benefit. It was an FCC perk which probably won't carry over under Govia, sadly.

For the question about freight FOC's...No one gets free travel unless you started before 1993, then you are classed as safe guarded.

Correct. You and a partner get free travel on all GOahead TOCs so southern, southeastern, gat ex, Gn, TL and London midland.

The East Coast travel is only until July when it is to be renegotiated so not garunteed. The Oyster card was paid for by FCC as part of a tax avoidance loophole which has since closed so we are waiting to see weather their talks with TfL about extending it for no cost to them come up with anything.

Of course in return, TfL staff get free travel between West Hampstead/Kentish Town and Elephant & Castle, plus Priv rate season tickets on the Thameslink/Great Northern network. Would be a pity if the arrangement ended!

Well that's why the talks will take place. But unless TfL offer GTR something in return then they won't pay TfL any more for it as they can't afford to.

It was not a question, it was a statement of fact.

The question was not directed at you and maybe I should have re-worded the sentence a little better. I will edit and take out "For the question about freight FOC's" in my thread now for you if I can edited the old thread. In my life, I wouldn't of thought it would bothered anyone, so I do apologise to you personally.

I've have read other threads on here, and some trainees seem to think they get free travel with FOC's. As I'm a safeguarded FOC driver and the thread was about free travel, (ok, it ended up as a GTR question) I added my bit. Now any of the new trainees will know they will not get free travel with any FOC, when they click on the "FREE TRAVEL"...I hope this puts everything back into prospective. And if it offends anyone I will delete the post, simples !!

Don't forget Finsbury to Moorgate on GTR too but isn't that very historical so they couldn't just stop those routes being allowed? Or then the others would want to wrap in the other journeys too. I don't remember getting any TfL allowance when working on Chiltern either so I don't think that is part of the reciprocal agreement but happy to be put straight.

The reciprocal agreement only extends to eligible Toc staff getting the Priv-rate PAYG Oyster on TfL Rail services and TfL staff pass holders getting Priv-rate annual seasons.

TfL staff pass free travel on those services comes from the Through Ticketing (Non-Travelcard) Agreement; and this does include Chiltern, between Marylebone & Amersham only.
