The case for terminating HS2 at Crewe just got a bit stronger.

Liverpool votes to ditch England as Merseysiders say let's join 'New Scotland'
12:17, 14 May 2015 By John Siddle
ECHO poll launched after thousands flock to sign petition calling on North to secede from England
The results are in... almost three in four ECHO readers have backed Merseyside’s move to ‘New Scotland’ in our poll.

Some 73% said they would vote for Merseyside leave England to join Scotland - after we told how a petition had been launched making the extraordinary demand.

More than 12,000 people have signed the petition - on the change.org website - calling for the north of England to break free and join an independent Scotland.

‘New Scotland’ would see Liverpool, Manchester Leeds, Newcastle and every other northern community ruled from Edinburgh instead of London.

I want to join Scotland too!!
I always considered Northern England to be more like Scotland than places like London, Berkshire, Hertfordshire & Buckinghamshire type areas.
It doesn't matter about party politics as London's heavily Labour and North Yorkshire and Lancashire are heavily Tory in some areas.

At least Scotland is pressing ahead with many new rail lines.
What's happened here? A few station openings and that's it.
If we were part of Scotland the Skipton to Colne, Leamside, Ashington, Fleetwood, Skelmersdale and Deepcar lines would be reopening already.

I'm just about prepared to take Hull despite it being a dump, but Grimsby is a step too far.

Yeah they're on the wrong side of the Humber so I think Grimsby and the rest of Lincolnshire are going to have to make their own way with England ;)

The proper North welcomes our new Scottish Overlords! Is it true that we can opt to receive Irn-Bru in lieu of Job Seekers Allowance?

The North is made from 3 official government regions.
Northwest, Northeast and Yorks and Humber.
Grimsby is in the North according to the Government's own definition.
And the map on the link provided looks to include most of South Humberside including parts of Grimsby. Who ever drew that line was not good at geography as large parts of Derbyshire are included. Don't understand any methodology to this line, not by council, geography, or organisations.

And calling Hull and Grimsby a "dump" is not on. If Grimsby was a dump, the upcoming film set in and poking fun at Grimsby wouldn't of been filmed in Essex. And if Hull was it wouldn't be city of culture 2017.

Oh, lighten up a bit.

Anyway, Hull is a dump - I spend enough time there to know. :D

And if Hull was it wouldn't be city of culture 2017.

I can only assume it's actually for the city that needs culture rather than one that has it already. Either that or they're running out of cities to award it to.

"Liverpool, Manchester" part of the north? Nah, we diven't want them southern jessies letting the side down and lowering the tone. ;) Anything south of smoggieland or Barra' (on the other side) is out. :p I've got a strong Scottish and Nordic ancestry, so if I can't perform daring cross-border "raids" on York then where's the fun in that? Though we might miss out on important tourist revenue from Scarborough.

Do you believe everything the Government says? ;) If so, then I suggest that you might as well stick with listening to Westminster anyway. :p

As the missus would sure have you know, there is a dramatic difference in outlook between the inhabitants of north and south Derbyshire, and she's a fearsome lass, so I don't tend to argue. ;) I don't have sufficient historical nous to determine whether this is a relatively modern phenomenon exacerbated by poor transport links between the north and south, or a far more ingrained cultural difference stretching back centuries, but nonetheless the good folk of the high peak align themselves far more strongly with the north at large than those that dwell in Derby, which is unquestionably a part of the midlands.

Not that either has a place in my "brave, new north", mind (just don't tell the missus that). ;)

Maybe because Derby was as far south as the Jacobites got in 1745?

I realise this is in jest but it still makes me mad when I see this myth perpetuated - the Jacobite rebellion had NOTHING to do with Scotland v England!!!! (Sorry to be off topic)

But the Jacobites were the former royal family of Scotland, had considerable support there and landed there before heading south to claim the throne of the (by then) United Kingdom. So while it was primarily about Stuarts vs Hanovers and Protestants vs Catholics there was an England-Scotland angle too.

I'm from, and live in, Manchester. The idea of being ruled by the SNP and Scotland makes me want to emigrate to Pyongyang.

The chances of either of those things happening are thankfully non-existent though.

SNP are better than Tory rule, what have SNP done so bad? They have a devolved parliament with a fairer system, look at the Scottish parliament and you'll see it's not completely SNP like UK parliament's FPTP allowed.
The North has been neglected like Scotland was before and any step away from London will not lead to disaster but to a bright future.
North Korea is a dictatorship with huge concentration camps, forced labour and even looks and attitude could result in execution. Saying Scotland's worse than North Korea is the silliest thing, South Korea's a better choice.

I suspect Snap might possibly have been aware of this. Exaggerating for rhetorical effect has been known to occur occasionally on internet forums. ;)

Jog on! Only four changes from Manchester to Pyongyang (London, Brüssel, Köln, & Moskau). A through coach is added to the Transiberian twice a month. Getting a visa may be a problem though - a couple of western tourists did this a few years back - their visas were issued in error but they were allowed to travel. It was rumoured that some officials in the North Korean Tourist Dept. were given their jotters (euth. Firing Squad!) over this.

The reasons Mancs don't want to join, is because there on a nice little earner as the Tories/Osborns bitch.

I'm surprised no one asked SoT if they want to come too.
