I bought a 7 day season ticket derby to bristol templemeads and wished to travel burton to bristol last sunday when replacement buses were operating from burton station. The scheduled service was bus from burton (18.05), arrive derby 18.30 Then the train 1836 derby to bristol (via Leicester as the alternative route).

The bus at burton was 10 mins late arriving and then arrived derby at 1837, missing my connection by 1 minute. Next train was an hour later from Derby.

1. Will this be taken into account if I submit my weekly ticket for compensation? I suspect not ?
2. If I had purchased a normal return ticket would I have received compensation as my overall delay was over an hour?
3. Is it advisable to always submit season tickets for compensation given the way in which it is calculated (average punctionality I think?)

Thanks.

CrossCountry operate Delay Repay so you should submit your season ticket for each delayed journey. Was your itinerary recognised as an official itinerary? If so, you were clearly delayed by an hour and should therefore be entitled to Delay Repay, just like if you held single/return tickets.

Yes official itinerary as shown on NationalRail. Will submit my ticket and see what happens. I assume they will divide the 7 day season by 7 and that is what they will base the compensation on? Thanks.

I think that is all you can do.

They will use a pro rata formula, which varies slightly from TOC to TOC. Southern use a figure of 10.5 journeys for a weekly to work out the effective journey price, whereas LM use a figure of 10 journeys for a weekly, for example, iirc.

Why didn't they hold the train until the bus arrived?
Dont know why it was not held? It was not as if it was two different TOC, both bus and train were cross country. At Burton station they did say that buses could not be tracked so expect that was the reason.
It would have needed a human operator at Derby station to alert the 1836 Derby to Bristol train that the bus was late! Not much chance of that!

They probably didn't because of possible knock-on effects. You may still find connections on some branch lines being held but on the mainline it is quite rare these days. Many TOCs won't even hold a connection which is the last one of the day.
