Coton Hill Tc Gbrf - Shrewsbury

Saw a GBRF train unloading?? aggregates at Coton Hill sidings Shrewsbury today.
Noticed theirs something in RTT most days this week running inbound from Tinsley.

Anybody got any idea what this is for and how long it will last?

Are you sure it was unloading? I thought the traffic was roaded-in to Coton Hill from Bayston Hill Quarry for loading to Tinsley pending eventual reinstatement of sidings for direct loading at the quarry.

A telehandler was in transit between the wagons and a pile of aggregates on the other side of the wagons to the Chester line so my view was blocked by the GBRF train of what exactly was going on.

GB Railfreight trebles aggregates work with Aggregate Industries contract

GB Railfreight yesterday (5th January) ran its first train for Aggregates Industries (AI) , as part of a five-year deal to transport aggregates, such as sand and stone, from AI quarries to various depots and handling sites across the UK.

Locomotive 66714, identification 6M28, left Croft Quarry at 23:15 on Monday, 5th January, and arrived in Neasden Freight Terminal at 05:56 on Tuesday, 6th January.

The multi-millon pound contract involves GB Railfreight running five trains a day, five days a week, from Bardon Hill, Croft, Neath, Avonmouth, Shrewsbury and the Isle of Grain to the following locations:

• Colnbrook
• Harlow Mill
• Angerstein
• Neaden
• Purley
• Tinsley
• Theale
• Brentford
• Bow West

My 1992 atlas shows Coton Hill as a CE depot, though there was a BP and coal depot off Crewe Bank showing as open for business.

I used to work there when it was a large ,marshalling yard with Sidings (as now) on Up Side and also on Down side at the North End and 2 signal boxes.
There was also Castle Foregate Goods Depot and some coal merchants Depots with access from the Up Side and running at a lower level than the Main Line under the road bridge towards the station. Crewe Bank was a different location.

Don't forget Abbey Foregate sidings, oil depot on the old Shropshire and Montgomeryshire Rlwy station it was accessed off the stub of the Severn valley line off Sutton Bridge JNc. It was always tripped worked by an 08.

The daily Cambrian pick up goods was always a very early turn off Coton Hill it finished in 83.
