Validity of tickets to different station same city

Always wondered about this. Seems to be different depending who you ask.

For instance, in Newport south wales there's newport which is on the mainline and rogerstone which is on the ebbw valley line. (and you can't get from rogerstone to newport - got to go back to cardiff - very strange).

Consequently, a lot of people will make their own way to newport, get a return from there to cardiff then get rogerstone train home (arguing its still newport).

Never known anyone getting any issues (probably because last train is rammed full and guard stays put!) but its probably not correct?

Not permitted in your particular example, but there may be unofficial local easements.

Officially no. Some season tickets have "AAA [another station]" (Also Available At) so you can go to either, where two lines are close together, but without this there's nothing officially saying it...

I know people that have a season ticket Glossop to Manchester who sometimes go to Marple. Is this valid? I'm assuming not.

Some stations are inter-available without it saying so on the ticket. Giggleswick and Settle, Moorthorpe and South Elmsall come to mind.

Long distance tickets to/from Bristol Temple Meads used to be valid to Parkway, Stapleton Road, Lawrence Hill, Bedminster and Parson St.
If this is still the case, I would expect Filton Abbey Wood to have been added to the list too.
My TM-Manchester Picc ADV ticket that I used last week operated the barriers at Parkway OK.

I have heard of people using this to their advantage (I'm new here, so I would expect this is discussed ad nauseum in another thread?).
Croy and Greenfaulds are about 3 miles apart and both serve Cumbernauld.
A single from Croy to Greenfaulds costs £4 and involves a trip via Falkirk.
A single from Croy to Falkirk costs £5 and an open return over £8.
As such, I understand that people from Cumbernauld going to Falkirk use this to their advantage.

As Croy and Greenfaulds are both in the former SPTE area I think the intention of the fare setter was for passengers to travel via Glasgow Queen Street. In fact there used to be a separate fares manual for SPTE stations. In railway terms the direct service from Falkirk Grahamston to Cumbernauld is relatively new and I'm not sure the fares have caught up yet. In a similar vein the re-opening of the Airdrie Bathgate section has thrown up a few anomalies.

The best Scottish anomaly however is this one.

The wiki article on 'station groups' reckons that 'Bristol BR' ceased in 1989.

I've asked at Cardiff Queen Street for a ticket to central from where I had a ticket home, and was told not to bother. No barriers that day, the staff waved me through. On the other hand, I've asked ATW via Twitter if I could get off a Queen street ticket short at Central and the answer was no. If I remember both cases were advances, the second case certainly was but I can't be sure of the first. Fare to both from Bangor (and to the bay) is the same I think.
