Hi just wanted to gauge peoples thoughts on a interviewer answering a telephone twice and leaving the room during a interview, disrupting my flow of answers to questions with him and his colleague, then returning and interrupting again. i've found a personal use for the word omnishambles.

just unlucky i guess and perhaps my interview was more important to me than them but given the effort made, im pretty annoyed.

I'd say a bit rude, but as he's got the job you want you just have to deal with it if you want the job and there is little point complaining about it.

Really both parties should have phones on silent for the interview, as both parties should be paying attention and after all if the interviewers miss something you said because of there phones then it works out badly for you. I know how much one phrase can mean I lost out on a job because of one phrase not being said. Not there fault it was mine that time but the point is still valid If they miss something it works out badly for you.

Good luck to you though...

Would you have preferred it if the interviewer had said something urgent had come up and they would have to reschedule your interview?

Ultimately it is impossible for us to know whether it is just someone being rude, or there was a genuine situation that had to be dealt with urgently.

There are a lot of things which a DM will find more important than interviewing somebody which will be a long way down the list, this might sound harsh but it is a fact.

i'm not made of glass, and fortunately today someone else said yes, i would have thought being interested in a interview would be a top priority.

i have clearly been spoilt previously, cant wait for the result.

i would have prefered him to have made his mind up, or yes invite me back later as it was close to ridiculous.

would be even better if they post on here but doubt they do.

I was an interviewer several times so can see the situation from both sides of the table.
I sometimes used to ask difficult questions or put those being interviewed into situations and see how they would react.
Usually if the candidate was calm and did not react then he got the job.....!

Funny to see this put the opposite way, as unless I was recruiting for someone who needed to be able to charm their way out of any situation, I would do the opposite and lean towards the candidates who showed more normal reactions, which I took to indicate they were trustworthy and sincere.

People aren't supposed to react smoothly to awkward situations, that's why we call them "awkward situations".

An interviewer answering a phone during an interview twice (once would be a bad but forgiveable error provided they ended the call and turned it off) would definitely be on a disciplinary if they worked for me, unless they had some kind of crisis to attend to (in which case I'd have the humanity to not expect them to conduct the interview in the first place).

Agreed. I had a job interview with a senior Ops manager of an organisation and a HR rep. The manager got a phone call halfway through. He apologised went out and answered the call. I continued with my answer. I didn't find it rude or challenging.

I think the interviewer was rude. Full stop. Did they apologise?

I think you just don't realise what it is all about. The DM was most likely on call and HAD to answer his/her phone due to the fact that it is probably the most important part of a DM's job. Maybe it would have been a good gesture to say that he/she was on call before the interview started as that is what I used to do when interviewing.
