I heard rumour from someone working within TFL as a Revenue Inspector that LU might be planning to recruit some external Tube drivers due to the ahead Night Tube plans as they will need some extra drivers across their network.
Could someone confirm if this may be true?

Yes they are. Interviews have been taking place on a weekly basis for some time now! There are rumours that there is a bit of a problem with training though.

At the moment there is a restriction on recruiting externally for the role of Train Operator due to agreements that have been made in the past. It was hoped that they would be able to negotiate away these restrictions as part of the pay talks, although whether this will still happen is anyone's guess.

You will almost certainly be better off applying for one of the jobs that are currently online.

Ah I thought as much it was just rumour. To be honest even if they did recruit externally the competition would just be crazy, getting into any role with TfL is hard enough let alone a train driver position on top of that.
When you say one of the jobs that are currently online may i ask what u mean specifically please?

Not as hard as it was until fairly recently - a lot of roles that don't require a high level of specific expertise prior to training are now being advertised externally.

As in applying for any of the jobs that are currently listed online.

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/jobs for anyone who would like to check.

Bear in mind that apart from the CSA vacancies (which are mainly part-time and fixed term contracts) many vacancies occur due to re-organisation and in such areas you may have 10 or 12 existing staff re-applying for their own jobs where there are now only 7 or 8 roles. Some of these jobs have to be advertised externally but the reality of someone else being able to come in off the street let's say theoretically, for a role requiring an overhead crane operator's licence along with the relative experience is pretty much zero.

With regard to the train op vacancies - for those very few posts that are filled by direct recruits if may help to be part of a group that is currently 'under represented' in the role.

No train operator vacancies on taleo currently and haven't seen any since february.

TfL did run a scheme where they were recruiting ex-services personnel as train ops. I don't know if they still do.

Just because they aren't online doesn't mean people aren't being recruited. Interviews and assessments are currently taking place, and there is a wait for training.
