Hi,

Walthamstow Central & St James Street have had gatelines in situation for some time now in preparation for the handover to London Overground at the end of this month. Walthamstow Central needed quite a bit of structural work and a new cage on the Chinford platform to prevent any barrier-less access to the platforms.

Just curious what (if any) other GA stations have had barriers or any infrastructure work?

Not long now.

Thanks

"The cage" is to be removed some time in June. Not sure if there is a short-term solution but eventually the gates on the LU station will be removed and the gatelines will protect both LU and Overground platforms.

I doubt Highams Park will get barriers - it has too many entrances and from what a remember with Wood Street they won't go there either (well for the northbound platform anyway).

Wood Street ought to be doable. Just close the gate at the bottom of the stairs to the northbound platform and channel everyone through some barriers in the ticket office, just as currently happens when there is a revenue block.

Ticketless travel on the Chingford line seemed a massive problem when I was a regular with the blocks catching loads of people. Barriers can't come soon enough. St James Street is crying out for them as well.

Yep they'll see revenue & official passenger counts shoot up now many stations will be staffed & barriered all day. It's one of the biggest wins for LO. TfL know the extent of evasion and that's why they've been willing to take over lines and adopt the revenue risk. Because it isn't much of a risk - many aren't paying but have poor alternatives to trains (ie buses are so slow) so will start paying.

Southeastern metro is the same, but the DfT call the shots there, so most stations are unstaffed or have open exits, thus quite a few very dodgy characters on the trains putting people off travelling, and its easy to avoid paying.

Yes. It's annoying how many people don't touch out on the intermediate stations on the Chingford line. Maybe they ALL have paper tickets ;)

Bethnal Green seems easy enough to gate although I've not used that station for ages so not sure if it has been.

What about the Enfield lines?

I haven't used my local trains much this year owing to the spiralling cost of doing so, but Enfield Town and Edmonton Green have had barriers for some time now. As for the other stations work might have begun at them already, but if not, Theobalds Grove would be extremely easy to gate, and Turkey Street wouldn't be much more difficult with the only requirement being relocation of a TVM.

Southbury would be a doddle too – there's a natural division in the concourse thanks to a wide pillar, which makes the station seem as though it's made for gating. Silver Street might be tricky owing to the closeness of the ticket office to a narrow set of stairs with not much circulating space. Beyond that I can't say much as the other stations don't see much use from me.

Or maybe they have Travelcard seasons loaded onto Oyster. No need to touch out then...

This line is often given, but compared to other very similar types of stations on other lines that have more barriers along their routes, the sheer number who don't tap in/out in comparison is noticeable. Many will have travelcards, but so many don't tap its very hard to believe many aren't trying it on. Plus, it matches other examples of evasion seen such as the numbers caught at blockades etc.

I'm not denying that. Just pointing out (for those who may be unaware) that 'person not touching out ≠ fare-dodger'.

I have a oyster season & always touch in and out where there's no gates. Having loads of incomplete journeys isn't ideal.
As do I, when I have a Travelcard season loaded. It's become an automatic habit, as I normally use PAYG. And a good habit to get into should touching in/out become compulsory for Oyster cards with season tickets loaded (as it is with the Nexus 'Pop' card).

I'm glad to see stations getting gate lines. It's infuriating getting off the train at seven sisters every morning, walking down the subway to a constant stream of beeps; people touching in having jibbed it from all the stations Theobalds to Bruce Grove.
