Quick question, now strike is called off I see on National Rail it now says: -

Customers, with tickets valid for travel on Monday, 25th May or Tuesday, 26th May, who had already changed their travel plans to travel on Sunday, 24th May or Wednesday, 27th May will be allowed to continue to travel on these days, but are strongly encouraged to consider changing their travel back to Monday 25th May or Tuesday, 26th , as previously booked, if at all possible. This will help avoid overcrowding on the 24th and 27th May.

• As a reminder, if you had an Anytime, Off-Peak or Super Off-Peak ticket valid for travel on either the Monday, 25th or Tuesday, 26th May you were allowed to use your ticket for travel on Sunday, 24th May or Wednesday, 27th May, subject to any travel restrictions that would normally apply to your ticket on those days.

• If you had an Advance ticket for travel on Monday, 25th or Tuesday, 26th May, you were allowed to travel on either Sunday, 24th May or Wednesday, 27th May. However, if you decided to travel on either of these two, alternative days, you had to use the same train service that you would have used on the 25th or 26th May, or the services immediately before or after that service.

My understanding of this would be that I would still be ok to travel come on Wednesday on my Advance I had booked for Tuesday? And on the Wednesday I can get either my booked train, the one an hour earlier or an hour later on the Wednesday (its an hourly service). I'd still quite like to have the freedom to stay that extra night - more time with friends.

Is my understanding of this correct do you think? Just with it saying "who had already changed their travel plans" that didn't mean I had to go to a booking office to change it did it - I assumed it meant I could use the ticket dated for the Tuesday, but on the Wednesday... In the last bullet point too it uses words like if you HAD, you WERE allowed to travel, you HAD to use... these are all past tense words?

I've interpreted it all as meaning that anything said before the strike was cancelled still stands.

Lots of people will have made alternative plans for overnight accommodation or rescheduled meetings and the like. It would be very unreasonable for the train company to then change their mind and so they still allow people to travel on which ever train they have been told they could.

Probably worth adding that (literally taken) the allowances don't apply to tickets booked post the cancellation announcement

I think it's saying it is not a free for all to travel on any train you wish and use the strike as an excuse

I phoned National Rail Enquirers today and they confirmed that they are "encouraging people to travel on their original day, however you are allowed Sir to use services on either Sunday or Wednesday too. The station and on train staff are aware of of this so don't worry." (so basically no changes)

So never mind what they are encouraging people to do, the fact is the ticket easements are still in place so you can use your ticket on either day.

I see - you want the flexibility of a walk-up ticket at the price of an Advance ;)
Just with it saying "who had already changed their travel plans" ....
that means exactly what it says, ie. it doesn't apply to your desire for flexibility ;)

(I won't get into a debate about whether this is detectable, but I will point out anyone can read this thread)

Very loose term that. That can be anything from changing an arrangement to rescheduling something with others, to amanding a hotel booking, it really is not definable.

Because it was looking like the strike would be on, my meeting with a group of friends has been moved by a day as they thought I would still have to be here and it means one of the guys who is working over the other days of the weekend can now come, I'd hate to miss that, plus it means more wine and beer for me...
That's why I phoned NRE and asked them to confirm for certain! "...you are allowed Sir to use services on either Sunday or Wednesday too. The station and on train staff are aware of of this so don't worry."" (that's what they said)

Doesn't give flexibility of a walk up either as your still tied to one of the 3 days e.g. Sunday/ proposed strike day plus Wednesday AND a the same booked time OR the train either side :) So you've not got the freedom of any train on the walk up with a whole month to come back by any means.

:D On Monday I will accept any ticket for Monday/Tuesday that hasn't been clearly marked as used - more time to deal with ticket less types !

I had no problems coming back in the end. I covered my ass though. Phoned NRE, LM Customer Relations and Southern Customer Relations and asking exact same question and got exactly the same reply from all. I also sent a Tweet to all 3 and they confirmed it would be fine too. (thought it best to have something of a paper trail).

When I got to Hove station for catch the 12.21 there was a gateline member of staff who is ALWAYS super friendly and helpful so I asked her for "permission" to travel and she confirmed they'd be told customers travelling on the Wednesday would be fine & to accept tickets and suggested I asked the booking office to endorse and stamp the back of my ticket. Booking office lady told me she didn't need to do that because an email had been sent around to all TOCs and they were bound by the same ruling and that all the guards had been made aware of the same - so therefore, she didn't mark the back of my ticket.

No ticket checks on board SN but on both LMs I went on had no problems. Was strange though that neither guard marked or stamped my ticket yet they did for everyone else sat around me. They didn't even take it off me let alone check I was on the correct train (or one either side). Yet they were doing this for others. I wonder if what had been communicated (to make it more simple for staff to apply) was to just accept all tickets on the Wednesday that should have been used on the Tuesday.

It did seem much more busy yesterday compared to normal - maybe though as its a half term.

My apologies if this isn't the right thread but I'm after a bit advice. The new strike date the 4th June coincides with my last day of a trip to the midlands, Tuesday 2nd-4th June, can anyone shed any light on wether I can change advance tickets to the Monday 1st to the 3rd or am I just totally screwed.
Everything booked well in advance, hotel and rover too.

Will need to wait and see what ticket easements they put in place. If the other proposed strike days are anything to go by, they allowed you to use your ticket the 2 days either side of the strike. I know its frustrating waiting for information, moreover when you've booked hotels and additional things. I cannot understand why they were able to call off the last strike and now all of a sudden there's talk of another one right away.
