Was passing through Stoke Mandeville today and noticed signs telling anyone heading to Stoke Mandeville Hospital to not get off and alight at Aylesbury instead.

Do any other stations have signs telling passengers to use a different station for some local attraction?

Mods' note: if anyone wishes to discuss 'Do not alight here' signs (which are completely different) please use this alternative thread: Do not alight here signs

I believe Chessington North used to have something along the lines of "next station for the zoo"

I wonder how you'd get along if you read one of these - presumably you'd have made the mistake earlier and only bought a ticket valid to Stoke Mandeville but would then stay on the train to Aylesbury.

I propose that East Croydon should have signs saying "Do not alight here for God's sake!"

Whatever you do, don't alight at Warwick if you are going to the University of Warwick. (I do believe there is a sign on the station to this effect)

Try Coventry or Canley instead!

And, when Abbey Road DLR station opened, posters told Beatles fans they were on the wrong side of London to the famed Zebra Crossing.

Edge Hill doesn't have signs warning that the station does not serve the university of the same name. However, the university prospectus does include a warning to that effect. Ormskirk of course is the correct station for Edge Hill University.

The Abbey Road DLR posters are still there :D.

I don't recall any publicity at Wimbledon saying to go to Southfields for the tennis.

There's a distinction to be made between "Do Not Alight Here" signs, for locations where it would be unsafe to leave a train; and those saying things like "Don't alight here for Stoke Mandeville Hospital" for normal usable stations that people might mistakenly alight at.

Most of the Warwick University isn't even in Warwickshire, let alone anywhere near Warwick!

And yet us folk at University of Birmingham are very coveniently placed...for obvious reasons...

Surprised Aston doesn't have signs pointing out that this ISN'T where one alights for Aston Uni and Aston Villa...

There are shuttle buses from the station to the tennis, so Wimbledon for Wimbledon is an appropriate choice.

Ah, so there are shuttle buses from there! In any case Wimbledon would be better placed to handle crowds, although the single deck 493 bus (which goes to both Southfields and Wimbledon) can't be fun during those days. And we've got additional stops on the longer distance services.

Coventry may not be in the modern administrative county of Warwickshire, but it's very much in the traditional county of Warwickshire.

Given how near the line the hospital is, is there a good case for opening a new hospital station?
I hope not! The journey from Aylesbury to London is slow enough. I wouldn't have thought SMH is a major attraction that it would attract that much custom arriving by rail?

Agreed. The former are very boring and all over the place, whereas the latter is what this thread is about.

Probably not "custom", but quite possibly staff...after all a station was just opened for James Cook Hospital.

We have posters both at Lewes and Newhaven Town, to tell punters for the ferry to alight at Newhaven Town. Not much point having them at harbour as it would be too late. I also make announcements and if checking a ticket and seeing harbour ask if they are getting the ferry. But each year there is still the odd one or two decide that Harbour is for them.

Makes sense there, as logic would suggest that boats can be found at a harbour rather than in town! Must've been even worse when Marine was actively open too...

So passengers trying to alight there are sent to Coventry?

That's even more problematic from a fares point of view than Stoke Mandeville, as rather than one extra stop on the same train it's a change at Leamington (and another one at Coventry if Canley is chosen).

I heard an on-train announcement by the conductor on the train to Yarmouth saying "don't get off here for Brundell Gardens." At Brundell.

There's a sign at Barnetby saying for "Humberside Airport" dispite no way of getting there that should say "don't alight."

Does anyone know if the don't signs exist at Colchester and Colchester Town, as that's confusing?

On match days West Ham Underground station has a bevy of police officers up on the platform enforcing a "Do not alight here if you are going to West Ham football ground" approach for the supporters, for which the nearest station to the ground is Upton Park, a couple of stops further along the District Line. It has apparently got worse there since the Jubilee Line Extension opened through the station.

Same with Warwickshire County Cricket Club who advertise Birmingham New Street and Birmingham Snow Hill as their nearest railway stations with a bus ride down the Pershore Road to complete the journey :D

May I refer the honourable gentleman to the answer I gave in post #15? :)

Try Coventry or Leamington, surely? Warwick University isn't near to any railway station, and that is where the 'buses go.

I imagine Kenilworth will be another option once that starts being used.

The same problem may occur for Fulham FC, where the nearest station is Putney Bridge, not Fulham Broadway.

If I'm going to Villa Park I would alight at Aston.

On the other hand if you wanted to go to Birmingham City University you would go to Perry Barr, not New Street or anywhere else.
