We will cover any issues that you want us to cover, including the Routeing Guide, ticket conditions, etc. Please send me a PM with any items you wish to add to the agenda.

We may run more fares workshops elsewhere and at additional dates if there is demand. So, if you are interested, but can't make any of the above, send me a PM anyway and let me know what would work for you.

There is usually a meal after (or during) each workshop

Just a quick bump for yorkie, these really are worth going to if you have any interest in rail fares - they're also a really good, informal way of putting names to faces if you're not sure about doing a full meet :)

You can add my voice to state they're really worth going to (I finally learnt the fares check properly!). I would add that you come up with a list and PM since it's easy to forget on the day.

I like to think my fares knowledge is pretty good already, particularly as rail staff, but I would like to take advantage of the anomalies myself. As we are reluctant to share them openly on the forums in case somebody picks up on them, I'd like to know what anomalies exist or are discovered during these workshops.

Come along to one and find out for yourself ;)

Just posting to say I attended the fares workshop in Manchester yesterday and I would really recommend it to anyone who is interested in railway ticketing and the routeing guide. The amount I've learnt and some of the things I've been shown have really opened my eyes and you won't find out about them any other way.

I was just about to put a thread with the same title up. I'm quite the novice at fares but I would like to know more, if not to help oneself, friends and family but for job prospects or is this a kind of rail staff only event for touching up skills? :)

It's not aimed at rail staff, but rail staff are welcome to attend :)

At the one I went to none of us were rail staff. I'd highly recommend you go - you learn a lot about fares in a short period and it's nice to meet people off the forum as well. Yorkie is a very good teacher!

Yeah, going by recent posts, Yorkie is extremely knowledgeable. I now kick myself for declining the Manc invite but family do's are non-negotiable! :P

The sessions certainly are informative and as well as being a good way to meet fellow members, it's also a good way to gain a better understanding of the ticketing systems.

If anyone gets the chance to go to a session then I suggest they do :)

We don't always cover the same things in the workshops so there is no straight forward answer as to a definitive list of topics. In the general fares workshops, we normally start with the Routeing Guide and will cover anything that the participants might not be happy about, then we look at some extreme examples which illustrate where and under what circumstances routeing anomalies might occur. We then discuss techniques that can be used under various conditions, and then anything else that the participants would like to cover. As we can all imagine, due to the different backgrounds of the participants, the requests can vary quite a lot.

For advanced fares workshops, we're still drawing up a list of things we need to cover.

I often wonder if Yorkie, Greenback, Alter Ego , Scotsman, Blind Traveller and all the rest really exist - are they a figment of my imagination :-x

I haven't met Greenback so he may not be real ;) haha.

At weekends I am called Julie.

Seriously though, Fares Workshops come well recommended from me. I am not an expert on splitting or working out overdistance fares (I will rarely be able to help with these requests on the forums) but I do know about ticket types and restrictions, and how the terms apply to the ordinary customer. I don't run the workshops but I have attended one and it was very helpful indeed, both as a regular passenger and as a TOC employee.

This sounds very interesting almost like a Rail UK Lodge of the Freemasons, do you have special handshakes to recognise each other ?

Do you live in constant fear of being busted by a BTP "Hit Squad" sent by a malevolent TOC?

I would like to attend one just to put a few faces to names.

Must book an appointment with my analyst :p

ps Is Yorkie over six feet tall ?

They really are educational, helps putting faces to names as well which breaks the ice - if anyone hasn't been on one then I suggest they do as you learn a hell a lot.

I'd just like to say a big Thank You to Yorkie for organising the workshop and to everyone else for their input. I certainly learned a few things during it and the time flew by. A very complex subject but there are plenty of little snippets of information for all participants to take away. Roster permitting I'd hope to attend the next one whenever it is.

I'd just like to echo The Colonel's sentiments and say thank's to Yorkie for setting the workshop up. It was great to meet some of the faces behind the names, I had a thoroughly enjoyable time and I am looking forward to attending the next one sometime in the near future. :)

I'd just like to say thank you to the organizers for Saturday's workshop, and for those thinking of attending the next one I highly recommend it! Whether you're a newbie passenger or experienced staff everyone can learn something. We were given hands on advice and practical examples, all of which went to understanding more about the complex and sometimes bizarre fares system we have.

Just to say thanks to Jake F, Yorkie & co for organising/hosting the Liverpool fares workshop that took place on Sunday 20 September. Well worth going for anyone who wants to find out a bit more about what can be, a complex subject!

I'd certainly be interested in attending an advanced workshop should one be arranged for a future date.

Has there been a recent one in Scotland? If not, may I suggest Glasgow or Edinburgh?

I live in an apartment very close to Ashford Intl station if you need a venue down this way.

Any more suggestions for possible fares workshop venues?

Is there anyone else for whom Ashford would be convenient (thanks district!)

Edinburgh Doodle link doesn't seem to be working.

While I'm writing, how much prior understanding of the fares system is needed in order to understand proceedings at these workshops? Is it pretty basic stuff, suitable for "just a passenger" who only knows how to book simple journeys?

Should work now.

No prior experience required. We do occasionally hold 'Advanced' workshops where you do need some understanding in order to get the most out of it but we clearly advertise those. This is just a 'bog standard' workshop so all are welcome and the content will be decided by what the participants want to cover.
