The MK3s were built between 1981 and 1984.

The MK2Es were built between 1972 and 1974
The MK2Fs were built between 1973 and 1975

The sleeper coaches are Mk3s. The lounge cars are either Mk2e or Mk2fs. The locomotives hauling it between Euston and Edinburgh are either 92s (built 93-96), 90s (built 87-90) or in exceptional circumstances, 87002 (built 73-74ish). After Edinburgh, it is hauled by a 67 (built 99-2000) but they will be replaced in the future by rebuilt 73s (built 62/65-67, rebuilt 14-15+)

I thought most coaches or locomotives accept those on the Isle of Wight that where built prior to 1976 had been replaced!

No, there's still a fair amount of Mark 2 coaching stock in use.

The "where"s certainly are. :D

Weres this leading, make no acceptions .

Anyway the facts are OK once the 1974 vs 1984 question is resolved.

I have not travelled on the sleeper recently but I would have thought a refurbishment would suffice. But then en-suite would be a big improvement (for first class) and probably not feasible in the current bodyshels. The train does not travel that fast - otherwise passengers do not get a long enough sleep !. So its not a case of needing something that is able to operate faster and I doubt if the existing sleepers have worn out running gear.

Of course the sleepers to the South West are the same type and vintage btw.

Most of it though is doing excursion services though isn't it and not doing day in day out services?

ScotRail/DRS operated Fife Circle LHCS services make use of Mark 2 stock, as does the Northern/DRS operated Cumbrian Coast LHCS services.

There's also a number of the prototype Mark 3 coaches in service with Virgin East Coast and First Great Western, they date from 1972.

Thank you for answering my question.
