RAILCAM ON THE SETTLE TO CARLISLE
Railcam are delighted to announce the second in our series of cams along the world famous Settle to Carlisle Line, in association with the Friends of the Settle to Carlisle Line (FoSCL).
Following on from of our hugely successful cam at Ribblehead, our second installation comes from Kirkby Stephen. Mounted at the beautifully restored self-catering Booking Office and Platform Cottages, the cam offers us superb views of this calling point on this world famous stretch of line.
Wikipedia say of Kirkby Stephen Railway Station,
Kirkby Stephen railway station serves the town of Kirkby Stephen in Cumbria, England. It is operated by Northern Rail, which provides all passenger train services.
The station is nearly a mile from the town at Midland Hill and was formerly known as Kirkby Stephen West because of the older Kirkby Stephen or Kirkby Stephen East station that was situated in the town and was on the North Eastern Railway's Stainmore and Eden Valley lines. It closed (along with all the other stations apart from Settle and Appleby) in May 1970 but reopened by British Rail in July 1986.
The station is leased by the Settle and Carlisle Railway Trust, which comprehensively restored it in 2009. The main buildings now incorporate a caretaker's flat, offices and the Midland Room, opened in July 2011, which includes a cafe and exhibition of items related to the Settle and Carlisle railway.
Potentially two future installations along the line are planned for the next month or so, giving us a superb coverage of this beautiful stretch of line.
The Railcam on the Settle to Carlisle project is jointly funded, installed and maintained by Railcam and The Friends of the Settle to Carlisle Line, and will feature on both websites. As well as the standard viewing options at railcam.uk we will also be producing a special Railcam on the Settle to Carlisle page which will feature all 4 cams together, along with links, news and general information from the Settle to Carlisle Line.
Again we have many people to thank, The Friends of the Settle to Carlisle Line for all their help in getting the project moving along and driving the idea forward, part funding the project and providing installation assistance. Railcam admin team members for the hard work behind the scenes, installation assistance and equipment setup. Last but no means least we have to thank the Railcam Supporters, as ever your kind donations help towards covering the costs when it comes to installing these new cams, cost doesnt stop once the cams are installed with the additions on the monthly hosting and streaming costs mounting up, every penny donated goes back into the site, we wouldnt be here without you, so thank you all.
