Hi folks :D

I have just been reading about the transfer of the 1959 Bakerloo line stock to the Northern line in 1986. Does anyone know where the two lines join or were the cars taken by road?

Thanks,

Adam

Transfers to/from the Bakerloo line are made via the Jubilee line. I'm not entirely sure of the exact method used in your post above, but the most likely option for an under-power, rail transfer would be as follows:

-Northbound Bakerloo line to Baker Street (Easiest reversal from the north would be at Piccadilly Circus)
-Transfer to the Jubilee line and transfer to the Metropolitan line at Neasden.
-Run to Rayners Lane on the Metropolitan line.
-Reverse at Rayners Lane, via either the platform or the siding, and join the Piccadilly line.
-Run to King's Cross St. Pancras on the Piccadilly line.
-Reverse at KXX and use the King's Cross loop to access the northbound Northern line (City branch).

From this point, the stock can run to any Northern line destination.

Whilst in those days this could have been done during normal traffic hours I assume that now the Northern and Jubilee Lines have computerised signalling so such moves have to be made at night, under possession.

Correct.

-Stock transfers to the Bakerloo must run after traffic hours, but before current off, to the Baker Street crossover. From there they must wait until current is live and can then proceed - either inside or outside of traffic hours.
-Stock transfers from the Bakerloo tend to run in traffic hours to the siding and then wait until the Jubilee line service has finished.

With the Northern line, all engineering train movements must be done outside of traffic hours, although they can run to the King's Cross loop before current goes off on the Piccadilly (Inside traffic hours).

Such moves would still take place during traffic hours, either as the last train before the start of engineering hours, or engineering hours would be cancelled for the night on the traction current section(s) over which the train was to run. The move itself would be controlled by an Incompatible Train Movements Procedure to ensure a safe method of operation.

By definition, traction current is off during engineering hours and trains do not run. They may do so within the limits of a possession, specified area or engineer's current area, but that is not relevant to the movement of engineer's trains or stock transfers around the system to/from a worksite or depot. While such moves are likely to take place either as a last train prior to the start of engineering hours or as a first train after the start of traffic hours, this is for operational convenience in the case of compatible train movements, and to ensure a safe method of operation in the case of incompatible train movements.
