Strava is a free mobile app for tracking running and cycling, but it may also be of interest to track rail journeys. It has very accurate GPS down to track/crossover level, and also shows speed and elevation graphs.

As an example, the attached image shows a tracked "run" from Lewisham to New Cross. The map shows that the train used the avoiding flyover past St John's. The graph shows distance, elevation and speed.

As a Strava user, it's a service for cyclists and runners - not for any other form of transport. It may well give you a good GPS trail, but be aware that you'll be rumbled pretty quickly.

Not many runners or cyclists will manager over 40 mph for very long ...

There are many other free apps that will give you the same info.

you will be popular with the serious strava users when you shoot to the top of the leader board for various segments! You will get blocked quite quickly after that ;)

There shouldn't be too many segments running along railways, so it won't be as much of a problem as a person who opens Strava on their phone while they drive along a road with defined segments.

There was a bloke here who was doing a solo ride from Adelaide to Melbourne (the shortest inter-capital trip in Australia at 730km) and raising money for cancer awareness who got caught being driven for a few long stretches with his Garmin still running. A few of his donors found out even before the day he arrived in Melbourne, so they decided to make direct donations instead of going through the appeal he had set up which consequently meant he didn't get a quite significant prize.

i couldn't possible comment ;)

I was involved in supporting a charity bike ride where we had to recover one rider by van after a mechanical breakdown and forgot to turn off the garmin thing on the bike. It recorded the 54 mph top speed of the van on one segment!
