I have a set of Edition 15 (Feb 1988) NLC directories, however am searching for a copy of Edition 1 (January 1968), or failing that, a much earlier version than my current copy, which would include 1960s passenger station closures that had at the time not been disposed of by BR, therefore would have been coded in 1966/67 when NLC was concepted.

Please PM me if you can help.

Was the National Location Code exercise a parallel to the creation of the National Route Code Catalogue, for which I have both a draft first edition issued in August 1968 and the first official edition dated 1 January 1969?

I can't help you, but if you find a copy then the guy running railwaycodes.org.uk would be very interested.

http://www.railwaycodes.org.uk/misc/contact.shtm

I would indeed!

Thanks.

It appears that you cannot receive a personal message (yet); I think you have to post a certain number of messages before you are allowed.

Would you be prepared to scan and email me the directory you have? Like you I am interested in anything that's closed, plus any introductory text for understanding the system fully. I would like to make sure that http://www.railwaycodes.org.uk/CRS/CRS0.shtm is fully populated! (Contact details as already posted by kjhskj75).

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can give.

Unfortunately each (numeric and alpha) book is 132pp foolscap and permanently bound. If they were loose leaf A4, I'd have gladly obliged. Happy to look up and check any specific data requests though.

Unsure on that point, what level of data is shown in the NRC catalogue? Could you scan and post any one page on here as an example, so I may see what is included?

Most of them were on A3, including the early ones I mentioned -- too big for me to scan. Here's an attempt to scan a page of the 1985 edition which has left the last column (P, F, PF) a little chopped. Hope it gives a clear idea of what was there.

Would you be prepared to check the CRS code for these, please?:

Aberystwyth (Vale Of Rheidol)
Beeston Castle
Brayton
Calveley
Cefn Onn
Cwmcarn
Daresbury
Eskmeals
Godley East
Hope Exchange
Lowton
Midge Hall
Radway Green
Turton
Wadsley Bridge

Thanks!

I'd also be interested in any introductory text if it's relatively straightforward to scan/copy.

I don't know where I read 'CRS' in your original message!

Either way, I appreciate the NLC information, which is of equal interest to me.

Thanks, and best regards.

I've had no luck (yet) in obtaining an earlier edition of the NLC directory, however as an aside have been looking at pre-NLC codings used, in particular on the LM region and am interested if any listings exist in respect of these codes.

Apart from on the Southern and Western regions, station of origin coding generally only appeared on Edmondson and Ultimatic tickets issued at other than "home" stations.

These fell into one of three camps...

(1) Excess tickets from small stations, often only staffed during morning peak only (eg: "Denham Golf Club 3051", issued at Gerrards Cross) NLC for Denham Golf Club is 3060. On Southern, both Canterbury stations and Ashford Kent carried a large range of such examples.

(2) Tickets for national journeys issued at suburban stations, eg: "Glasgow 9681 to blank" issued at Greenock Central

(3) On Merseyrail, as opposed to issuing conventional "return" tickets, two individual tickets were issued, the return coupon always reading from "Liverpool nnnn" where nnnn = the NLC of the issuing station. (eg: "Liverpool 2201 to West Kirby" - issued at West Kirby 2201)

In the above examples, the station of origin is easy to identify as the tickets carry an NLC. However, without a very old code listing, others aren't. For example:
Coventry 26352
Birmingham 26468
Frankton Halt 65763
Liverpool Lime Street 23412
Liverpool Lime Street 23431
Manchester 22667
Manchester 22704
Blank 27154 - although I happen to know this pre-NLC code was for Wembley Central 1423, as was on site in 1987/8 on the day the stock was withdrawn & Aptis installed.

If anyone has any further detail or listings of these old coding schemes, please come forward!
