Latest light rail and tram statistics
The latest figures show:

  • in the financial year ending 2015, light rail usage in England continued to rise with record numbers of passenger journeys (239.8 million) and vehicle miles (18.4 million) since comparable records began in 1983
  • since the financial year ending 2005, the first full year when all current systems were in operation, light rail journeys have grown by 51%
  • around 2.7% of all public transport journeys in Great Britain are made on light rail systems

https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/light-rail-and-tram-statistics

The biggest increase from 13/14 to 14/15 appears to be on DLR (8.5% increase) with Manchester Metrolink seeing a 6.8% increase and Tyne and Wear seeing a 6.7% increase. Tramlink and NET have also seen increases with Midland Metro, Blackpool Tramway and Supertram seeing drops.

Am I right in thinking Metrolink is the only light rail network to have opened additional lines and stations?

As of yet yes, although Lines 2 and 3 in Nottingham are nearly ready. Early August is the date currently going around

T&W also uses a re bodyshelled German tram design, though same is also true of the newer DLR stock.

Metrolink had a major terminal closed for nearly the whole statistical year along with frequent weekend closures for engineering works as did a couple of the other systems. Revenue rose in proportion to the new extension capacity and patronage was up considerably too, looks likely to overtake Croydon again within a couple of years and already far outstrips it in revenue and mileage, Blackpool seems to have shot themselves in the foot by no longer accepting bus passes from non-residents, concessionary travel down 80% and a 5% fall in passengers.

LU, Glasgow and Edinburgh are under a separate statistical table to the other systems, presumably as their monitoring are outside Dft responsibility.

I wonder how usage of tickets with a destination or route of Manchester CTLZ changed during that period and how it was recorded. The tickets would have been sold as usual but with no trams at Victoria I imagine more people would have walked or used Metroshuttle instead.

They calculate it using periodic sample headcounts where they check what kind of tickets people are using, usually carried out at Piccadilly Gardens.

Perhaps we need a new category for the Glasgow Subway of 'Tiny Rail' as if it isn't Light Rail it definetly isn't Heavy Rail either!
