A small number of us were interchanging at York this evening and noted on arrival a railtour sat in platform 3 with a 68 on one end

We found out it was this - the Northern Belle:
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U51809/2015/06/06/advanced

We arrived at around 21:50 so it had been sat there a while and deduced there must be a problem. Walking down to the London end of the train, 57305 was sat making one hell of a racket - it sounded like it was idling at a far higher rate than it should have been (standing next to it for 25 mins may not have been the best move!). After a little while a 66 was brought in, coupled up and the whole lot left with the 57 still "idling"

Does anyone know what had caused the problem that seemed to have declared the 57 a failure?

57s, when providing ETS, always sound as if they are revving their nads off even at tickover.

Ah ok, never really heard them before. It was certainly providing a fair bit of ETS - I didn't count the number of coaches but there must have been ~11 of them

It wouldn't be the first time in recent memory that DRS has had problems with a 57 on a high profile passenger hire ......

A Northern Belle to/from Grimsby?! :o

Would anyone living in Grimsby even have been able to afford a ticket?!

Someone I was with seemed to think it was 57305 that failed a little while ago working the Christmas Northern services - does anyone know if this was the case?

Judging by the length of the train, there must have been the majority of Grimsby on board!

Official reports state that only three quarters of the residents managed to escape, but were safely rounded up and returned later on. The other 2 carriages were people from Louth who were curious to see what a train actually looked like! :P

I wonder if any were disappointed they ended up being hauled by a shed!

Must say, I was wondering how long it would before you put in an appearance here :P

It was a 10 coach set, although two were kitchen cars and one coach was a sleeper coach (for staff accommodation). There were a lot of people on Grimsby station waiting for it on Saturday morning, as it was also booked to call at Scunthorpe I assume it was fully booked.
As for those typical comments about the people of Grimsby, I'll have you know not all of us in that area are deprived/poor although I don't think I could have afforded the £340 for this trip, even if it did include a five course evening meal https://www.facebook.com/Joatwish/photos/gm.1425907460982389/678598618849511/?type=1&theater
And enough of that Grimsby stereotyping you lot ;)

68003 was providing traction. It ran to edinburgh departing 14:59. I followed it out of York 15:08 to Newcastle, was on double yellows from pilmoor pretty much all the way to darlington. 7late as a result! The heinz was providing ETH with the 66 dead on rear when i filmed it leaving York

Theres a youtube clip here of someone who filmed it with 57305 leading providing traction

Slightly off topic, but these workings aren't on Railtour info for some reason.

The one mentioned above was a Northern Belle service? Was it a special charter though not shown on their website?

Looking on Realtime Trains, the stock (and presumably locos) stayed in Barnetby Down Reception Sidings overnight and then worked ECS to Cleethorpes the following day. From there it worked a service to York, then a service from York to Cleethorpes via Darlington before returning ECS to Crewe (where the stock arrived from on Saturday morning, having left at 02:38 in the morning!)

A video of the tour on Sunday can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeO5juJtd74

There is a Class 66 at the rear which presumably rescued the tour on the Saturday and then remained attached to provide motive power instead of the 57 which sounds like it was still providing ECS.

What was the tour on Sunday? It's a strange working and, once again, I can't see it mentioned on any rail tour site. In fact, Railway Herald mentions Saturdays tour and says it's a new tour, but does't mention Sundays tour at all. As previously said, Railtour Info doesn't mention either.

If anyone is interested in the complete set of workings-

Back on topic, where is the Class 57 based? Would it have been taken back to Crewe with the rest of the stock including the Class 66 or would it have been left at Cleethorpes to be picked up by whoever owns it?

Lol, im on the opposite platform filming with my mobile!!! Was ****ed of when craigentinny rolled in, i thought Bar Steward! I've just had my tornado moment! Thankfully she didnt open up properly until the HST cleared. Will post my clip once i download my mobile!

its not off topic anyway, 57305 was still running when it passed us (me on 3, CosherB on 5 by the peg) admittedly I thought it was odd when I saw a 66 attached to that DIT on the rear!

They were charity railtours.
The 57 is owned by DRS, and is based at Crewe Gresty Bridge. However, it was on the Cleethorpes to Crewe C.S (with 66426) when it went through Grimsby Town, however they were dropped off somewhere with the 66+57 going to York, with the 68 dragging the stock all the way to Crewe. The 57 should have been moved to Toton today by the 66, assume that move went ahead.

305 is owned by DRS, so probably based at Carlisle?

Don't you mean Darlington, the tour on Saturday which was 57 & 68 ran to Edinburgh (the return was dragged by the 66), whilst the tour on Sunday ran Cleethorpes-York, before returning via Darlington.

Photo plug ;) - photos of the charters taken at Grimsby Town and Cleethorpes https://www.flickr.com/photos/sboothby/sets/72157654036675556

no, I followed it to darlington. it made me 7 late following it on the ECML as I posted earlier. It was looped there so I and the following XC and EC services could pass. it then followed us to Newcastle. The HST that got in my way on my vid is Craigentinny leading!

That's probably why they weren't on Railtour info then as they people who upldate the website probably didn't know about them.

Thanks for the info about the 57. I thought the Northern Bell was operate by DRS now but for some reason I thought that the 57 was owned by West Coast. It's probably because they have a similar set of Pullman Mark 2's

Its only because in your post you mentioned that the 66 was on that train, yet the 66 wasn't involved until the return working (Edinburgh-Grimsby).

We've had charity railtours start from Cleethorpes before that haven't been mentioned on charter listing sites, one to Alnmouth (Harry Potter special) and one to York.
Yes, the Northern Belle is run by DRS, and WCRC do own some 57/3s (57313-316). Of course WCRC have the former Manchester Pullmans and some Pullman Cars, which are in the Pullman livery.

57305 has subsequently been returned to Toton - https://www.flickr.com/photos/60963146@N04/18470183288/ (photo not mine)

A couple of points of order.

The Northern Belle and The Royal Scotsman are operated by Belmond. DRS are contracted to provide locos for the NB while WCRC do so for the RS.

Manchester (and Liverpool) Pullman Mk2s, of which there were 29 carriages in total, are split between the Northern Belle set (which also has Mk1 and Mk3 carriages), WCRC and Statesman Rail.

The Royal Scotsman is formed from Metro-Cammel carriages and a couple of Mk3 sleepers.

DRS do not own 57/3s, 12 are leased from Porterbrook. As you say, WCRC do own the remaining four.

On your first, sorry I worded my post wrong, thats what I meant

On your last point, Platform 5 book has 57301/303/305/306/310/312 (those no longer VT thunderbirds) as DRS owned, with the others (except 57313-316) Porterbrook owned.

I stand corrected - I should have also checked the Porterbrook website too!

So why the 57 for ETS when the 68 can supply that?

The 68 was in a state of complete shutdown when I saw it on the return leg - so much so it had the red flashing light attached to the back rather than using the tail lights of the loco. It may be possible that ETH was provided by the loco leading the train (not sure if the 57 was DIT on the outbound journey)

For some reason the 68 wasn't able to provide ETH on Sunday (and possibly Saturday), thats why on Sunday the 57 was retained with the train.

57305 was returned to Crewe on the 9th, behind 66426 from York to Toton then on to Crewe behind 68015 in the consist working from Toton.

Whatever was wrong with 57305 now appears to be fixed as it was on an engineers train from Crewe to Toton yesterday.

Spoke too soon .... 57305 failed whilst running Toton to Crewe yesterday evening
