I am planning a trip down from Birmingham New Street to Euston on the 30th of June. My choice of trains are 8.50, 9.10 or 9.30. I know the 9.10 is a Scottish train. So I assume a doubled up Voyager. The other two I guess are Pendalinos. Am I correct or not understanding how trains are allocated.

Thank you Stephen.

Off the top of my head they should all be Pendolinos. The 09.10 is the Lancaster starter which from a set outstabling at Preston.

I'm not saying that you're wrong about those specific trains, but I don't think that logic still applies. There are (or were) some (maybe just 1) Birmingham - Euston xx50 and xx30 services booked for voyagers. Many Scottish services are pendolinos

Thank you for exactly what I needed to know. I think I will reserve a seat on the 9.10. The 8.50 is an unofficial 11 minute connection for me if I remember. The 9.30 will be my last resort. All I need now is dry weather over a small patch of South London.

Thank you again, Stephen.

I've just had a look and the 09.10 was booked for an 11 car 390 in the December timetable as was the 9.30. I don't know if thats changed in the May timetable, sorry.

Thank you. I did wonder if it changed in May. I guess both types should get me comfortably, quickly and safety to London.

I suppose comfort is in the eye of the beholder (bum of the be-sitter?), but I can't see a Pendolino being any quicker or safer than a Voyager.

If you go to Real Time Trains it will be shown as 390 Electric or 221 Diesel. Although as we have to keep pointing out on the Forum, RTT shows the timing load for a train and not what is diagrammed. However, in the case of these, 221 or 390 has proved from experience to be reliable info to work on as to what is booked.

Doing a dummy booking is bringing up 1st class seat reservations for a pendolino so it is planned for that. Obviously only one 1st coach in a voyager which is a different letter.

The only trains from New Street to/from London that are guaranteed to be Voyagers are those that run to/from Shrewsbury or are formed of stock that splits from those trains. Other than that it appears to be quite random as to whether you get a Pendelino or Voyager, particularly after the morning peak.
