What were the previous differences between the two?

Also, has there been any progress in finding a steam locomotive to cover for Joem over the Summer?

When is the passing loop at Bedale going to be commissioned ? I saw it laid in 2004 and heard it described as "The most expensive siding in railway history".

What were the previous differences between the two?

The Association was a limited company with no shareholders, focussed on providing volunteer support for the Railway plc. Of course, it was the founding organisation (in 1990) for creating the Wensleydale Railway out of the redundant Northallerton-Redmire BR mineral line and held a significant shareholding in the subsequent WR plc.

The Trust was a registered charity whose focus was on raising significant funds (both donated and grant-aided) for the preservation of the heritage of the Railway

It is expected that the combined Association (Trust) - being a charity - will bring the best of both organisations to the benefit of the Railway whilst lessening the administrative demands made upon the volunteers who made up the Boards of both organisations.

On the facebook page, a WR volunteer stated that a Hunslet Austerity would be 'too small for 22 miles' - do they mean in terms of water/coal capacity? I wouldn't have thought the J72s capacity was that much greater than an Austerity?

It would be interesting to know the operational reasons behind this, as from a purely statistical perspective, a Hunslet Austerity has a greater (almost double) water capacity than a J72 and a slightly greater coal capacity (2 tonnes 5 cwt versus 2 tonnes). The Hunslet Austerities also have a far greater tractive effort, a higher boiler pressure and, being nearly ten tonnes heavier, greater adhesive weight on the driving wheels.

I can't remember where the Wensleydale have water facilities both times Ive been there its been diesel but on the Kent & East Sussex with a J94 you can get a range of 13 miles with a degree of safety from a full tank of water hauling 5 mk1 coaches, Ive once done a return trip of 21 miles with 4 coaches on (both these assume no steam heating). A bunker of coal is good for a full working day which for us is around 66 miles but depending on the quality of the coal and the fireman! a couple of times its been an empty bunker at the end of the day.

When steam is running on the line, the engine is refilled at Finghall Lane on the journey to Redmire.

A GBRf Class 66 is to be named in recognition of Wensleydale Railway Association's 25th Anniversary on the Wensleydale Railway on the Friday of the Railway's Diesel Gala weekend in July https://www.facebook.com/WensleydaleDieselTractionGroup/posts/588909654582394
From the WRA(T): As part of the WRA 25th Anniversary Celebrations we are happy to announce that at the forthcoming Diesel Gala, GBRf (a mainline freight company) has agreed to name one of its new class 66 diesel locomotives "Wensleydale Railway Association 25 years 1990-2015". The naming ceremony will take place at Leeming Bar on Friday 17th July. The locomotive will then work the train to Redmire.
Our thanks go to GBRf and the gala organisers for arranging this.
