Class 68 names

Does someone at DRS like Sci fi films/space exploration? All the class 68 name seem to have such a theme.

Have i managed to miss this as i thought they were all warship names but they appear to be star ship names

I think that probably indicates more about your line of thought than that of DRS ..... I don't see a Class 68 named 'Enterprise' yet ..... :roll:

There have been several Royal Navy ships named Enterprise with one currently on deployment:

interestingly the the first HMS Enterprise was a captured french Frigate. Of course the name has a long association with the US navy. Their first Enterprise was burned in 1777 (?) to prevent capture by the British.

So if they are named after ships that name would be appropriate.

PS The USS Enterprise may trademarked

DRS have stated that the names are not intentionally Warship-related, simply names which reflect the progress/techology/power/future with the 68s - hence Evolution - although some, like Hornet, are a bit less obvious in that respect.

Well one 50 was called "invincible" and it didn't stand up to its name.

I'm not sure it's up to Chiltern to name 68s as they are still DRS locos! As far as I know, no, but 16 to 19 have been allocated names by DRS.

Great to see traditional loco names being used rather than the tinplate adverts that some other operators use!

That is correct AND I reckon power etc would be a stronger motivation for most of the names that naval warships received. So no coincidence but not a direct connection.

Talking of 50s I have to correct "gimmea50anyday". The real, non-maritime, warships were classes 41, 42 & 43 . As for enterprise - class 52 D1000 Western Enterprise springs to mind.[/bias].
