Hi All,

I'm working in Ilmenau this week, but have Thursday off. Any suggestions for somewhere to go within a 3 hour train ride from there? I've been to Erfurt, Weimar, Leipzig, Dresden, and Wernigerode on the steam train up the Brocken. I'm not too bothered about going to Saxony as I'm in Dresden for 5 days in July anyway, any suggestions within Thuringia or Saxony-Anhalt?

Gotha and then the Thüringerwaldbahn tram.

Eisenach for Bach and the Wartburg for Luther.

The Oberweissbacher Bergbahn off the Katzhuette branch. It's then a short bus ride to Neuhaus am R the terminus of a long branch from Meiningen so potential for a circular trip.
Stop at Lauscha for glassware.
Shame the line S of Ilmenau is closed to regular traffic, but there's a bus instead.

I'm assuming the Rennsteig line isn't running as Corpus Christi isn't a holiday in Thüringen.

If you've not done the Selketalbahn and Quedlinburg, that's another option but a bit far.

Thanks for that 30907, the Gotha option looks great.

Town trams and the Schloss (not been inside) as well as the overland tram, and I think the DB Froettstadt to Friedrichroda branch is still open, parallel to the tram at one point.

Absolutely agree with the Lichtenhain - Cursdorf. A top attraction railway even (especially?) right through the DDR era http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oberweißbacher_Bergbahn

Same applies to the Thuringerwaldbahn tramway

i would have suggested Stolberg (Harz) a beautiful half timbered town, but the passenger service was bustituted in 2011. However there is a massive freight complex at Rottleberode serving huge gypsum and timber plants which I have seen in passing and would love to go back and watch properly.

I stayed for a week at Schloß Reinhardsbrunn, on the Thüringer Waldbahn from Gotha, in 1977 deep in the DDR era.
You can also reach it from Fröttstädt via the Friedrichroda branch off the main line.
I think it's closed now, but it was the place where Prince Albert and Victoria first met.

During my stay, I visited Erfurt, Weimar and Jena (behind a steam loco, the last time I had one on a normal public service) and Eisenach.
Two good excursions were to the top of the Großer Inselsberg (on the Rennsteig long distance path), and to the Wartburg above Eisenach.
The funny bit about the finger post on top of the Inselsberg was that all the fingers pointing to West Germany were missing.
It was a radio station and no doubt broadcasting propaganda or jamming the western equivalent.
You can walk up through the woods from the Tabarz terminus of the tram.
I had a dodgy moment on the branch train, when I couldn't remember the name of the junction on the main line.
I got the attention of a bunch of schoolkids as I tried to recall the name "Fröttstädt" for the guard.
I thought I was about to be hauled off to the Stasi HQ for fare evasion, but they all just laughed at the stupid foreigner!
On another train I found myself sat opposite a Soviet army officer in full regalia, but luckily he didn't want to chat.

I passed through on a train again 3 years ago, and was amazed how "normal" the area now was.
The formidable rail frontier at Gerstungen is no more, of course.
The main line railway has a very interesting history. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halle–Bebra_railway

In case anyone is interested I went to Gotha and on the Thüringerwaldbahn line 4, which is a nice 14km tram ride out into the countryside to Tabarz. On the way back I asked the driver if i could perch my camera on the dash, and he said yes! So the film below is the driver's eye view - enjoy!

Thanks, it brought back happy memories from 15 years ago, and you had wonderful weather for the trip too.

It was scorching every day, such a contrast to when I work in Thuringia in Winter!

Thanks for posting.
The line's the same, but the ambience is totally different to my trip 38 years ago in the DDR!
Would be nice to have a line like that linking the villages in, say, Devon or the Derbyshire Dales.
