I've seen an occasional HST passing through Renishaw near me which had me scratching my head. Did some digging (Brother in law is an S&T designer at Derby :) ) and I found out that's an alternative route between Sheffield and Chesterfield. I'm presuming most runs are either for engineering works or route knowledge and upkeep.

So to my question, Are any runs over that route regular so that I could go catch one or is it just pot luck?

Keep an eye out as a charter service will be heading that way on Saturday (Pathfinder's Don & Went) :)

It's time this line was reopened for passenger use with intermediate stations on the line being reopened. I travelled on the line quite a bit when they main line was closed due a landslip and the journey was done in 18 mins some time even though they were given 30 mins. The quality of the ride was excellent and has improved massively over the year. Clearly the track in excellent condition. There's about as much chance of getting this line reopened for regulator services as there is the Edinburgh circle.

You make a suggestion - not well explained (what would be the service you are thinking of, what stations should be re-opened?) - but then rubbish your own idea in the last sentence.

So what are you suggesting?

On friday night The 22.01 to Derby went via the usual route but the 22.00 to Birmingham went round the cut.
Regarding the Edinburgh Circle, there was massive public support for reopening in the 80s and 90s and i believe there has been such support since. But local government back then were completely disinterested. Instead the city got a pointless tram system where the money would have been better spent opening stations like Morningside and Cameron Toll. Now we have government inquiry into the tram fiasco which wastes even more public money.
Sorry I forgot to mention the stations that could open on the cut. These are sizeable townships ans the roads into Sheffield at peak times are awful. So these places would benefit from finally having decent public transport. Killamarsh, waterthorpe, beighton, Westfield, sothall, halfway. The lines either goes directly through or passes near these communities. I would suggest a free park and ride at every station. I realise in the current fragmented and uncoordinated way we do things now that free parking will never happen. It would however attract passengers. Or a combined season ticket with free parking included would be attractive as long as the price isn't excessive. Once again that's unlikely to happen. These are simple steps that would alieviate the massive traffic problems in and around Sheffield. sheffield station has plenty of platform space to accommodate extra trains. Each platform can hold around 16 coaches, maybe more. There aren't any full length trains anymore through Sheffield so there is a lot a unused platform space.

I think it could be the case that the north end of Sheffield station (2 tracks) is close to capacity.

16 coach trains would be of little use as other stations en route are not likely to accommodate even a 10 coach train.

There is a great deal of hatred towards the Edinburgh Tram system.

Despite the hatred, it seems to be very popular with people who actually use it!

On my trip to Scotland last Tuesday evening, it was standing room only from Edinburgh Park Central at 7pm and remained heavily loaded through to Haymarket where I disembarked.

Likewise on Wednesday afternoon when I made my way back to the Airport, boarding at Haymarket at 4pm it was full and standing all the way to the Airport.

I use the Edinburgh trams on the journey between Edinburgh Park and Edinburgh Airport at least once a month. It's made a considerable difference to my travels and I can now (when Winchburgh isn't an issue) get from Stirling Station Platform to Departures in an hour.
