We continue by transferring onto the 2 line of the Shanghai Metro (which, interestingly, also starts at the Airport, but is decidedly less fun and markedly slower than a Maglev, whilst also involving a change of train!). The next Westbound train pulls in at 20:16, and takes us under this busy city to Hongqiao Railway Station (上海虹桥站), arriving at 21:07 on Wednesday evening.

We then decide to continue on our high-speed tour of China, surfacing and boarding the 2136 Mapabc G7388 service to Nanjing (南京南), arriving at 2329 Wednesday night.

We decide to head for a more adventurous land, and at 17:27 we board China Beijing Railway Bureau train K27 towards Pyongyang, North Korea, arriving at 19:30 the following day (that's Friday evening). On entering The Hermit State, the train number changes to 6 and is now operated by Korean State Railway of North Korea.

Here's a challenge for you!

A challenge indeed - timetables seem to be non existent for local transport - and even getting to the airport without a taxi looks iffy.

One journey we can in theory take though is to get the 5 train at 1010 next day in the Beijing direction and ride to the border station at Sinuiju Chongnyon , where we arrive at 1520 on Saturday afternoon

In real life, of course, you wouldn't be able to explore the DPRK like this - you'd be escorted around by your "minders" who orchestrate every aspect of your visit. So there's not really any benefit in publishing timetables!

Realistically, you're able to wander around relatively freely in the border area, so we take advantage of a rare bit of freedom before heading back to the station to board the K28 train at 17:13 and cross the timezone to arrive in the Chinese border town of Dandong at 16:23 on Saturday afternoon.

Well, I've managed to grind the thread to a halt

I did try to get us to the airport, but despite the size of Shenyang it's actually quite difficult to do by public transport. So, we change onto another train service, the 23:42 K7376 to Dalian, China, arriving there at 05:47 on Sunday morning.

Well we can take the D31 train to Beijing, leaving at 0907 and arriving at 1512 Sunday afternoon

(China Travel Guide)

I'll gloss over using what appears to be the same train 3 times to leave the DPRK. Special circumstances and all that

Wanting to cross off another continent, we board Emirates flight EK767 (although it's onboard a Boeing 777) to Johannesburg, RSA, pushing back at 2320 and touching down at 0530 Monday morning.

This leaves Beijing nearly four hours after arriving at the airport. Are you sure there's nothing to Dubai before then?

Yeah, I thought it best to keep moving rather than just hold for 24 hours in the DPRK. Real risk our next move would have been a trip to Yodok Gulag!
Beaten... :(

We decide to explore this country on the rails, and catch the 08:45 Blue Train service to Cape Town, which takes its time to arrive in Cape Town at 12 noon the next day (Tuesday).

Source: Blue Train Timetable
For the purposes of the quiz, I have assumed that we arrive on a Monday that the service is running.

Taking into account this extract from the rules:

[*]The playing area includes the whole world. Great Britain is prohibited except for interchange purposes at airports, ferry terminals or similar (i.e. you could fly into Heathrow from Paris and fly back out again to Berlin but couldn't travel to another airport within GB or use any other domestic transport links).

....we then board the 2330 British Airways flight 2062 to London Gatwick Airport (UK), arriving there at 0830 on Wednesday morning.

We use a fourth successive plane as we board the 0910 Norwegian Flight 2852 to Stockholm Arlanda, SWE, arriving at 1230 Wednesday afternoon.

We then feel like playing with small coloured blocks, so we transfer onto a fourth successive plane: Norwegian's Flight DY994, departing at 1405 and touching down in Billund, DEN at 1515 Wednesday afternoon.
