I was only looking last week! but according to a couple of the immigration websites i looked at train driving is not on the skills list for Australia or New Zealand at the moment so getting in could be trickier than it normally is! and it's normally tricky anyway lol!
my only conclusion can be that either they have gone insane and don't consider train driving a skill or they must have had an influx of drivers in recent years!

What u can do is the train driving nvq in uk and then apply for the oz train driving certificate. This will increase ur chances and lead to contacts overseas
If it's not on the SOL then you won't get in, an NVQ won't help.
A company can look to sponsor however they need to show that they have attempted to employ citizens without luck and that the skills required are in short demand.
In the case of this occupation chances are it'll be filled without the need to seek overseas drivers.
I'm a driver in Sydney. I applied under the general skilled migration program back in 2003 when I was a newspaper printer.
The process was fairly straight forward - you have your skill certified and then you apply for residency. There were two lists one was a list of skills that were in demand and you would be fast tracked and the second was a list with skills that you could simply enter the country with. The second list had literally 1000s of trades ranging from plumber to cabinet maker to hairdresser to truck driver etc...... I'd say if you have a skill and your under 44 you'd be fine.
In regards to driving you would have to train again here in Sydney although I don't know the other states stance on accepting qualified drivers.
Sydney won't be hiring for quite some time but Melbourne and Queensland seem to hire fairly regularly.

Nice one. You made it. As a printer in 2003 you were a commodity. Time moves on however and the SOL does not list train driver.
I'd say check the list, you may have a previous recent career that you can use.
I talk from experience, I wanted to move but couldn't as my career wasn't on the list initially. When it finally was the other half got cold feet so here I remain.
Been there many times and love it.
Australia is an expensive place to live nowadays compared to what it used to be like. Great country, but knuckle down here and you can do well.
I'm lucky enough to have Dual British / Australian citizenship. I've been driving in UK for 5 years and keep looking for driving jobs back in Melbourne. In that area there are two companies. V/Line or Metro. V/Line require you to have a Victorian issued Loco License to be considered. To get one you would have to work at Melbourne Metro. I tried Metro and was told that I would have to start as a trainee, so feel free to contact them if I moved back. Bit of a catch 22 situation.
