Noticed something rather unusual this evening, which did at least take my mind off the debacle at the weak beer stadium tonight: a Northern 158 arrived at Huddersfield from the Leeds/Bradford direction, which I assumed was going to be my train home. Upon my arrival on P4 all doors were closed but active, and I noticed the unit was coupled to a 142. I was about to board when a Northern member of staff approached me and asked where I was headed. When I said Batley, he told me this was the Manchester Victoria service and that the Leeds stopper would be arriving shortly. AIUI 158s don't normally work West of Huddersfield, so I'm now wondering why this one was being sent West. Is there any maintenance work that can be carried out at Newton Heath (or Allerton) that can't be done at Neville Hill, or is this in fact a regular positioning move for tomorrow's early Calder Valley services that I was somehow unaware of?

Although unusual for working through from Huddersfield to Manchester, a 158 often works the early morning Marsden-Leeds stopper, having arrived .ECS at Marsden from Huddersfield.

Do they have to lock one unit out of use due to platform lengths?

I can see there being a lot of annoyed passengers if they have to travel on the Pacer when a 158 is on the back locked out-of-use.

It was a four car 158 the other week, Absolute luxury. Not many passengers on at that time to really get annoyed! Its been happening on the very last Huddersfield since before May, probably about two years on and off.

This happens with all 4-car formations except 2x142 due to short platforms at Slawit and Marsden, with the rear unit being unlocked (if needed) at Greenfield. It is annoying if there's a 156 or better at the Huddersfield end, though the opposite applies in the other direction of course.

Assuming this is 2M91 2215 Hudds-Victoria we're talking about?
The 158 appears to come off Leeds-Sheffield/Nottingham expresses, though the 142 I'm not sure on (appears to be off Leeds-Vic services)

That's the one. I was in the King's Head drowning my sorrows when it arrived, so I wasn't 100% sure if it arrived on an incoming service or as ECS. Presumably the 158 comes back East via Rochdale the following morning?

I presume you meant services on the Huddersfield line when you said this, but if not, they do work Blackpool - York services and also Man Vicc - Leeds via Bradford and Halifax, amongst others!

Indeed I did. Of course they work many places West of Huddersfield (Blackpool, Aberystwyth, Bristol!), just not from Huddersfield!

How times change!
Only 9 years ago and it was only 158s which worked the fast services west of Huddersfield. :)

And only a few years before that there were occasionally 142s standing in! <D

Its been a booked move for about 4 years to bring a 158 back to Victoria from Huddersfield late at night. It used to be on the 2234 HUD-MCV before the timetable change, now on the 2215

Its a local instruction for Slaithwaite and Marsed JCollins, which takes precedent over any annoyed passenger.

Does a local instruction dictate it has to the front or rear unit that is locked out of use or could the crew use common sense and open the larger unit if it's a busy service?

Try to put yourself in the staff position.

You have two units coupled together, no selective doors gimmick and all. Approaching Slaithwaite, on the up the platform is on slight right curvature. There are no stop boards, you can't see the back of your train, it might be any combination of units etc.

You do know that only 2 car set fits on the platform. Would you really want to risk stopping within platform with only back set? It is much safer and easier to just go to the end of platform with the front set. You will always be in.

Hence you always have the back set locked out.

Here is the local instruction from the Sectional Appendix

Trains composed of power operated door stock longer than a 3 car Class 14X unit or a 2 car Class 15X unit available for
public use must not stop for traffic purposes at the following station platforms:-
Slaithwaite - Down and Up (Both 60 metres)
Marsden - Up Passenger Loop (51 metres)
Marsden - Down (65 metres)
Any additional units conveyed must be locked out of public use throughout.

So Greenfield is where any additional sets must be opened/locked on the route.

Common sense isn't allowed over a rule in the Sectional Appendix i'm afraid.

I have seen the the rear of two 150s in use at Slawit heading Eastbound. The guard came out of the rear cab and instructed any pax for Slawit to move to the next (3 of 4) carriage. He then released doors from behind the front cab of the rear unit, I was in the rear car and the buttons for the doors lit up but were not in the platform. This might not have been strictly within the rules but to me it seemed a better option than cramming everyone (it was an evening peak service) into the front unit.

By the way, thanks to the moderator who moved the thread, wasn't sure whether this section or Rolling Stock was the right one, so went by the rule of coin-toss!

I have often joined 4-car services at Slaithwaite when the rear 2 have been out of use until Greenfield. This week, however, joining a 2x142 service at Huddersfield, I was asked my destination by the guard and directed to the front set. Other passengers (presumably for stops west of Marsden) were allowed in the rear set, and when I left the train at Slaithwaite, the guard dispatched from the front of the rear unit.

Has there been a relaxation of the rules? (Not identifying the exact service to protect the possibly guilty!)

If the rear unit can be de-selected on corridor stock, then I can't see there being a problem.

Having seen the local intstruction, things may have changed or a case of certain Guards being "naughty"

Could the guard have utilised just the local door? Presumably this would be permissible?
