@northernrailorg: AMENDED: Due to disruptive passengers 16:20 #BlackpoolSouth to #Colne due 18:13 will be terminated at Burnley Central.

Is this a common issue on these services? Seen it 3 times now in the last few weeks.

What sort of disruptive behaviour would cause a part-cancellation? Trouble between Blackpool South and Preston by the looks of it.

Almost certainly ticket and / or alcohol related....

"...will be terminated..."

I didn't think it existed, but I believe the people at Northern have just invented the future-past-continuous tense.

You should see the amount of lineside graffiti that has appeared recently on the lines out of Waterloo. The whole route to Hounslow via Brentford is absolutely covered in it :'( (less on the Richmond side).

NR are supposed to be doing a major lineside clean-up , south of Hendon is like the West Side Gallery in Berlin ....

Not really surprised. There was a very rowdy group of "holidaymakers" (I prefer the term yobs) onboard a late afternoon BPS bound service last week. I'm from Blackpool originally so have seen all sorts and this group were extremely bad, stupidly drunk and shouting abuse at each other and fellow travellers. The guard was in the rear 142 on the 150+142 set as far as I could tell. It certainly wouldn't be tolerated on a tram in Blackpool, but the trains are harder to monitor.

Going OTT, it's the passive future perfect progressive (or continuous) tense.

Can't be any type of perfect tense as it's missing the auxiliary verb "to have"!

As this is such a regular occurance, are extra staff / the BTP not drafted in to maintain the peace?

I've done York-Blackpool North many times and never encountered a problem.

Why does it seem to always be a problem involving Blackpool South I wonder? Is it because it's the more commercialised side of Blackpool, or is there a very close pub or something?

Perhaps it's because the system at Blackpool North physically locks the yobs out of the station. Perhaps those silly doors have a use after all!

A lot more of the very cheap holiday accommodation is at the South end compared to the North plus there are two travelodges and a Premier Inn all within walking distance of South.

I wouldn't say the nearest pubs are any nearer South than North tbh.

Also isn't it cheaper to go to South than it is North? It certainly was cheaper from South to Preston when I lived in Blackpool compared to the same journey from North.

The services through East Lancashire from York to Blackpool North are mostly trouble-free. The services through East Lancashire from Colne to Blackpool South are notoriously bad.

On one route, the stations served are staffed, the terminus is gated, the train is semi-fast and the guard has plenty of time to check tickets. On the other route, the stations served are mostly unstaffed and too close together for the guard to be able to check tickets properly. Guess which route is troublesome.

I'm not having a go at front-line staff, by the way. The point is that every chav in East Lancashire knows which rail journeys can be done for free; and they do - by the train-load. That's the attraction of the Blackpool South services, along with the source of the problem being discussed.

Was speaking to one of the guards on Sunday, as the Colne branch is my local, and he was telling me that drunk travellers were damaging the trains and abusing the staff.

Really gotta feel sorry for the staff on some of these lines, with some of the things they have to deal with on a daily basis.

Kind Regards
Anthony

I can only really comment on the Blackpool South - Preston section of the route but it's generally relaxed and trouble free outside of the high peak summer season (July/August). The big draw on the line is Blackpool Pleasure Beach, that's where a lot of the groups seem to be heading in the Summer. A lot of groups are families but trouble seems to arise quite a bit with drunken/rowdy day trippers. Usually something to do with tickets or just being obnoxious.

There's very little difference in fares actually, but Blackpool North has barriers of course and a staff presence, which Blackpool South and Blackpool Pleasure Beach don't have.

There is no difference in fares between Blackpools North or South. The price differential was removed (not sure when exactly) at some point after Northern took over. The York to Blackpool North trains used to be more expensive in the days of Arriva. The Colne to Blackpool South fares were set by First North Western and were cheaper (presumably because it was a Pacer!)

Sorry to be pedantic, but there is a small difference west of Preston. :D For example, an Anytime Day Return Blackpool North to Preston is £8.60 but Blackpool South to Preston is £7.90. They are informally accepted interchangeably though.

I sit corrected!

I didn't know the price differential remained from Preston. Seems strange given that from stations in East Lancashire the fares are the same.

I imagine BTP are stretched enough over the summer holidays as it is. Chuck in seaside towns, a bit of sun and every chav in the land appears to come out!
The New Brighton, West Kirby and Southport lines on Merseyrail can be particularly bad on a warm summer day...

You'd think with the line going through Lytham, St Annes and Blackpool Pleasure Beach, that the Blackpool South line should become the main line and Blackpool North be the conduit for pacers and the problems from Colne and points inbetween.

Has there ever been serious discussion about swapping the major terminus in Blackpool from North to South?

I'm of a certain age that I can remember when Blackpool Central, followed by South, were the major termini in Blackpool, served by the direct Marton line from Kirkham as well as the [then] double-tracked coast line via Lytham. And, IIRC, Colne trains, formed of 1st Gen. Cravens dmus, did go into Blackpool North.

I cannot recall any serious discussion concerning reverting to the original pattern, and think the subsequent demolition of Central and severe rationalisation of South, will make it prohibitively expensive.

A large chunk of car park including disused platform 2 at BPS is being sold to Blackpool and Fylde college for a 'green energy' building. Imo another very short sighted move.

I tried to take a train from BPS a month ago, but a drunk passenger refused to leave the train and abusing the staff. Apparently BTP no longer regularly man their station at BPN, so had to wait for BTP to come from Preston.
Had to take stagecoach no 68 bus instead to Preston.

As the South line is single track from Kirkham junction, the line is occupied for 50 minutes in the hour which gives little leeway for delays. As dynamic passing loop is needed between Lytham and St Annes to give a better and more reliable service.
Some comments from a very disappointed holidaymaker on Blackpool tripadvisor forum - http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTo...outh_Trains-Blackpool_Lancashire_England.html

I'm not saying to dig up the car park and relay the track to where Central was. I just think it would be better to re-double upto Blackpool South and gentrify it as best as you can (make Moss Side a request stop or re-site?)

If you can get the rough types to Blackpool North quicker than South by diverting Colne stoppers, you can quickly get them on to the streets of Blackpool for the local constabulary to deal with rather than having issues on the train on single-line sections.
