I don't think you can compare the two (and their problems) just because they're both sleeper services!

I think you're also missing something :D

The night Reviera has had it own fair share of problems, recently with the 57s not playing ball.
Its mainly just because Serco has only just got the franchise so all eyes are on them.

There do not appear to have been any notable delays on the Lowland or Highland sleepers in the past week.

The Night Riviera doesn't always run smoothly without delays. ;)

Need to remember that the WCML is busier than the GWML and is also electrified therefore more potential to mishaps

Correct me if I am wrong but i am pretty sure that FL 90045 gave up while working the sleeper (1M11) about 2 days ago that caused deleys to that service.

I'm not sure they're comparable services as they're so differently organised. For one thing the Night Riveria is just two trains per day serving two destinations. The Caledonian serves six destinations, uses twelve trains to do so (with them joining and dividing on route) and has motive power changes to boot.

Thanks for all your comments , I must concentrate more on the Paddington beds via Realtimetrains instead of being glued to the Scottish beds with all their delays and mishaps taking place week after week :) regards Dave1954.

The West Country Beds have been more reliable recently with the return of a couple of 57/6s to traffic and a reliable lease, 57303
On the other hand would you describe the Scottish Beds as Serco teething troubles.

I don't know the headcodes but I've looked it up and that's the Up Lowland Sleeper. On 11 August 2015 it was scheduled to arrive into Euston at 0707 and appears to have actually arrived at 0734, ie 27 late, so not really a big delay and not even triggering delay compensation.

Yes that's the one. 27 mins late (public time!)

It had been running up to 79 late so did well to claw a lot of that time back... it could of been very different though had things not gone in favour.
I think ladyluck has shone on them a tad there.

Aren't the sleepers timed for 80mph but are authorised to travel at 100mph if running late? Therefore there's effectively plenty of scope to catch up if running late.

The data plates on the Caledonians certainly say so.

The FGW Sleepers have a lot of time built into them, mainly to allow for having to travel over diversionary routes in event of Engineering Work.

Worth bearing in mind that Class 92s have a top speed of 87 MPH.

That's correct, but as already stated the 86/87/90s have the best scope for recovery as they can do 100mph unlike the 92s!

Does the overall top speed actually matter that much for this service? In a theoretical one hour at constant top speed, the 92 would be just less than 9 minutes behind the 90.

That 9 minutes could add up to an infinate amount of knock on delay minutes affecting other services, could also be the difference between passengers making other trains, meetings, compensation or penalties etc.

Please keep the discussion in this thread centred on general reliability issues for the sleeper services along with comparisons between the operation of both and how this affects punctuality etc.

Discussion about specific incidents is off topic for this thread and should be posted elsewhere.

Thank you!
