I recently bought 2 tickets from a Northern Station and was not given a receipt for them. Is it possible for the ticket office to retrospectively print me a reciept(s)?

Not that I'm aware of. Why do you need a receipt, would the ticket itself not suffice? (Just ask to keep it at the end of your journey).

To claim the cost back, yes but will have to wait 6 weeks to claim back the considerable sum owed

Make sure you keep the ticket! Maybe your company will accept a photocopy of the tickets and then you won't need to wait 6 weeks?

The ticket belongs to the railway and they are well within their rights to not let you keep it.

I don't know about other employers, but mine won't let you claim expenses for a trip until after the trip date anyway. If you need to buy tickets for a work trip in advance and you don't have a corporate purchasing card then you're supposed to get the admin team to buy them for you.

Unless you say that you need it for a delay compenstion claim :p I am yet to have a gateline member of staff refuse to have my ticket back. On very rare occasions they have ensured it has been marked before giving it back and one ripped the corner off, but still ensured all the information was visable.

Seriously, there is no way in reality that they are going to tell to that you can't have the ticket back.

I know they are in their rights to keep it, but I've only once had any bother at all getting it back. I didn't want it swallowed by the barrier and the guy insisted that I had to put it in. I just explained that I needed it for expenses and he let me through - though he did say to get a receipt in future.

I believe that it would've been possible to get a receipt had you gone back on the day, but not after they've 'cashed up' at the end of the day.

I disagree, he was right - the ticket is the property of the railway after all. And he didn't make a big song and dance routine of it, the whole exchange lasted 30 seconds tops.

My employer requires both the original tickets and a receipt!

Photocopies not accepted by my employer. Expenses can only be claimed ex-post, not ex-ante.

Yes, but are there any reasons for them not to let you keep it?

I've only ever once had bother too. Someone on the Victoria gate line was very insistent that I must put it in the barrier, rather than just wave me through. I dutifully complied with their instructions, passed through the gate line and then returned to request the ticket was retrieved. They were most willing, but it did waste 15 minutes of their own time having to open up the machine and then pick through several tickets to find the right one.

That may well technically be the case but I have never been refused when requesting to keep a ticket; all that has ever been done (if anything) is to ensure it isn't unmarked and to scribble on it if it is.

That's unfortunate (and surprising seeing as tickets aren't VAT-able). Mine doesn't so I've quite the ticket collection as a result. :)

Even though it a the property of the railway and all that, anyone decent would not have said boo to it and have just given you the ticket without saying anything whatsoever.

I think the OP will just have to keep the tickets then explain to the employer and ask them to still allow the claim. Failing that, they could refund the ticket with a £10 admin fee and buy new ones. But this is best avoided as is costly.

Regarding staff insisting that it is put though the gateline barrier rather then a manuel check: there is nothing the barrier can read that the eye can't. I personally think they are just getting too lazy to check tickets. There is no way either they could insist a customer use the automatic barrier if they had a disability that made it difficult for them. Noting of course that may be a hidden disability and the customer is under no duty to actually disclose what that disability is. (of course not mention of such as been made here by the OP, but in general speaking when it comes to going through gatelines).

It is also not acceptable that customers are being forced to put their tickets though gatelines when they need the ticket for another purpose (e.g. delay repay) then they are being delayed further by the gatline staff having to retrive the ticket from the barrier. In such a situaiton a person checking the ticket and letting them though would be what is reasonable.

I keep telling myself it's keeping some clerk in the finance department busy, so helps maintain someone in employment. You'll be pleased to hear they stopped asking for the reservation coupons on the back of the seats a few years ago. That ridiculous requirement made claiming Crewe to Euston journeys very difficult! <D

I wonder would they pay the £200 fine for removal of said reservation labels were it imposed?

Madness.

They'd pay anything provided you had the right paperwork! That's the ironic thing about it all - it's not to make sure you're abusing expenses, just to obey some sort of internal auditing rule. If you can't produce the appropriate tickets/coupons there's a form to make up for it.

That is simply an unreasonable request! The amount of times in the old days of paper coopens on VT that reservations were not honoured too. What sort of company do you work for :p I will never complain about mine again now after reading this. It does seems to specialise in making expenses difficult as far as possible for employees.
