I'm looking to go on a scenic train journey from Birmingham New Street on Thursday for a day out. I'm looking to travel no more than 3 hours. Where would you suggest is a good scenic journey?

Cambrian Coast? There and back to Pwllheli would take far more than 3 hours, but you could go as far as you can get in an hour or so and turn round and come back.

(tries but fails to resist suggesting that anywhere is scenic compared with Birmingham New St, at least until the atrium opens :) )

In my opinion the best scenic route is a round robin from Birmingham New Street to Hereford via Bromsgrove , then up the marches to Shrewsbury then down to Birmingham via Wolverhampton not forgetting a few beers on the way :) done it a couple of times , recommended :)

A variant would be Newport - out via Hereford back via Chepstow or vv.
