Just a simple question how long is the longest that rolling stock has been left sittings in sidings for without use but at the same time not been scrapped?

Some of the ones I can think of are Oakamoor Sand Sidings where some of the items rolling stock have been there since at least 1988 although the line is not owned by BR/NR any more.

Longport there are 2 liquid containers that have been there since at least 1999.

Kingsbury Warwickshire, there are many wagons that I think have been there since 1989 although they may have been there longer.

I am sure you can think of more.

There's a few random wagons in Healey Mills yard that have been there for a long time, but I'd struggle to put an exact figure on it myself. Probably not as long ago as 1988 though!

At Barnetby until a few years ago some liquid nitrogen tankers were on unconnected sidings for over a decade, not sure precise age but they were very rusty.

Same wagons at Caverswall, sidings have been unconnected for a while. Probably there since Foxfield originally closed in the 60's.

Some of the items at Carnforth have been there for many years and at Haverthwaite there was a fireless engine called Sir James which was there from 1982 until 2010 but that is now at Eastriggs.

Those would be the former BOC Liquid Nitrogen/Oxygen tankers, I think they had been there since the late 90s, the wagons were built around 1971 and were quite a state of the art design when new, remember them well from my youth as they passed daily where I live now in a block train which originated from Widnes to possibly a destination in the Sheffield area? with a COV AB van at each end and usually hauled by a single class 40, They always seemed to be keep in spotless condition.

There is an HAA wagon at Bletchley that must have been there for an age - it has a tree growing out of it.

Those vehicles have been there since at least 1996 I believe.

Surprised nobody's mentioned the Oxford parcel vans.

What happened to the heavily graffittied parcels van that was abandoned at Wolverhampton Low Level ?

It must have been there for decades.

I'd love to know how long the brake van at Shenfield has been there.

Also clearing work for the new station at Cambridge is revealing some old wagons in there.

The BOC services ran to a place called Broughton Lane in Sheffield. In the last summer of operations on the Woodhead route myself and a couple of school mates stayed at Crowden YHA and watched class 76's hauling these trains. I'm guessing that the loco swap took place at Guide Bridge. After the closure of the Woodhead route we did see them running through the Hope Valley, occasionally double-headed with a class 25 and class 40 and at other times just a class 40. Memories!

I think its fair to say there are quite a few wagons that have been laid up at Toton for getting on for a decade and will never move again.

Broughton Lane, that's the one, been racking my brains all morning trying to remember, many thanks for that:)

Can you remember from your stay at Crowden if the 76s managed those trains single handed or double headed, from memory they were always 10 or 11 cars weighing 100tons each! Many a time when they passed here at night the forty would be on full power climbing up from Heaton Norris Junc. with jets of flame coming out of all 4 exhaust ports, the noise was awesome!

WCRC have recently rearranged their sidings, so a lot of it has now moved around by the looks of things, thus I'm not sure it meets the OP's criteria. Also, it's not exactly abandoned either, just used for spares or awaiting refurbishment.

It now looks like this (photo taken yesterday), whereas before it was more of a mixture including mk2's and 3's:

About 10-15 years ago I recall reading a newspaper article about a US railway depot in Florida where they'd had some locked wagons hanging around for as long as anyone can remember. They forced the locks and discovered that inside were war supplies for the US military that had been sent to support the American armed forces in the Spanish-American war of 1898.

For some reason they'd been forgotten and had sat there with their load for roughly 100 years.

There's a van with what I think says Motorrail in the Longsight sidings near what used to be the Eurostar shed near Manchester.

The 1983 TS were sat in South Harrow sidings between 1998 and 2015, and were in quite a state when they were carted off to booths

Is all that 1983 Jubilee line stock still loitering around various yards on LU, having been there since the extension opened ?

I think they were there for 15 years, which is two years longer than they were in service.

Supposedly they were "in store" which is a euphemism by LUL and its predecessors for "left to rot".

These were 1983 Mark 2 stock, but the 1983 stock as a whole is an appalling example of miscalculation and waste. The long saga of upgrading the signalling system on the Metropolitan Circle and District lines suggests that LUL's tradition in this respect is still going strong.
