Off Peak RTN with 16-25 but now DSB. Opinions?

On 4 August I purchased an Off-Peak RTN from Euston to Liverpool Lime Street using my 16-25 Railcard. My Railcard expired on 6 August 2015; however, I have since become eligible for the Disabled Railcard (and have duly purchased that card).

I would like to use the return portion of my ticket (valid until 3 September 2015). Obviously I know the official line; i.e. this MUST be accompanied by 16-25 R/C; however, given that the price of this ticket with the DSB R/C is exactly the same price am I likely to encounter a 'pantomime' should I present this ticket with the DSB card (which is now valid)?

On a separate issue would I be right in thinking that a Liverpool/Euston return portion used via Sheffield would be a permitted route?

You know the official answer - no, it isn't valid. In good conscience the only advice I can give you is to buy a new ticket and apply for a refund on the unused portion of the original ticket.

I'd say that you're as likely to find a guard who will pass it as one who would stick to the rules - is the cost of an Anytime single something you're willing to gamble on?

Nope. Liverpool to London isn't valid via Manchester, let alone Sheffield. You would need a combination of separate tickets to take this route.

If you explain the situation at a ticket office, particularly that you're not transferring the ticket to somebody else (showing both railcards might help), they might agree to change the discount for you

That's a good shout, worst thing that can happen is that they say no.

Sounds like the sort of thing where the ticket office stamp and a note on the back might come into play. Best go at a quiet time and they'll be in a better mood and more likely to help

Sounds a plan. And yes I do have both railcards

Yup

And to the OP, if that fails, a word with the TM (guard) before boarding might get you the OK. I've found Virgin's TMs to be a friendly bunch.

If all else fails, are you still eligible for a 16-25 railcard as well as the disabled one? If so, and the ticket office won't change the discount on your ticket, you could always renew the 16-25 card anyway if that's cheaper than the cost of replacing the ticket. There's no rule that says you can't hold two different railcards at the same time, as long as you meet all the criteria.
