I'm quite an avid follower of Twitter, and have a lot of train related people I follow.

However - two who seem to chat a lot are the VTEC team (genuine, actual team as far as I can see) and Save EC Rewards (campaigning for EC Rewards to be reinstated). Seriously, they can be chatting on and off all day!

Seems a bit strange to me - anyone know if there is a ploy behind this or something?

SaveECRewards is a poster on here but I don't understand why they would be taking up so much of their own day and the CS team at Virgin by doing this - what are the conversations about? Is it just constantly about reinstating the rewards programme?

I cant access twitter at work.

It is just general chit-chat generally. Certainly very little about the scheme anyway!

The VTEC Twitter team post some very strange comments to people. Some of them are actually quite flirtatious or very cheeky. Personally, I'd just prefer them to direct their efforts to good service and on time trains than fancy social media.

If they didn't have their little love-in with SWlines RealTimeTrains, the EMT twitter account would be just about perfect. Factual, helpful and to the point. And professional as well... rather than the Virgin Group's endless attempt to be your 'best mate' (which the rest of the VTEC franchise currently fails spectacularly to embody) and I think this is the root of all of this chit-chat.

You could of course avoid using Twitter and live an equally happy life, in which case you wouldn't be aware of any of this.

I personally prefer the VT approach to twitter, as good as a professionally run account is the target market of Twitter don't want factual helpful and to the point, they want funny, individualised and interesting things.

I didn't say I was 'unhappy' with anything...

Most of what happens in the twittersphere passes me by entirely.

Twitter has uses; they are not great but they are not none.

Twitter has many uses for train companies from Information provision, to both mass and individualised marketing, and also a chance to solve problems as they are occuring.

My wife Tweets, I don't and yet we both receive the same offers from TOC's, the only difference being I view them via email. Unless the TOC's are Tweeting real time train information I really don't see the point. Not only that but all the Tweets in the world won't stop a train from being delayed etc.

This is a sad reflection on the direction our society has taken; substance is no longer important.

That, or, VTEC want free good publicity by having a 'funny' and 'personal' Twitter account that can also be helpful, serious and factual. Tesco do this very well

I've no issue with friendliness, banter and chit-chat per se, I just thought it strange the amount of talk they have with "Save EC Rewards" which was a big negative against VTEC six months ago - I would have thought 'management' would have instructed staff to stay clear of this.

It's like Sainsburys having a Tweet-Off with someone called "TescoClubcard4Life".....

Individually, as ToCs go, Northern are actually pretty good with their tweets too. Tell you what's going on, but very quick to get back to you with any queries you have.

I personally think it's a Virgin thing, almost all Virgin companies tweet funny things to people. I was reading the other day that Virgin Atlantic had responded to a customer "if all four engines were to fail, we will fall to the ground like a f---ing dart.", don't know if it's genuine or not though!

I too have noticed the tweet thing between SECR and VTEC.

Ive just visited the site and can see some tweets and only 1200 odd supporters out of what I can only imagine are tens of thousands of EC users so Im guessing tis not going that well. And not many petitions on change.org get listened to let alone implemented.
