Stamford, Lincs. - very wide bridge (Bridge No.?)

I was in Stamford today; about 150m east of the station the line disappears into what I took to be a tunnel and reappears above ground about 300m further along after passing under two roads, several houses and other buildings and a cemetery. However on the road above, and on a wall at the other end, there is one of those bridge identification plates (not sure of the technical term) so apparently this is a 300m wide bridge. Is there a story behind this, are there other examples and, if so, what would be the widest such bridge in the UK?

OS 1:25000 mapping (for example on streetmap.co.uk) describes it as a tunnel and shows the B1443, Barnack Road, as running directly above it for essentially its whole length.

On the Sectional Appendix it is marked as a tunnel.

It is Stamford Tunnel - that's it's official name.

It is indeed Stamford Tunnel, but - as with most (all?) other tunnels, it's still given a structure number, and a bridge plate just in case a road vehicle strikes the parapet.

Dont quote me on this, but im sure i read somewhere that when the railway was built, the landowner was dissaproving of an iron road through the area.
The solution was to tunnel a short area. I believe there is actually another tunnel near the station, albeit shorter. Im sure someone will correct me.

I don't know the area, but there isn't one listed on the sectional appendix, maybe it's too short?

Not near the station and no others at all between Stamford and Peterborough (the land is very flat), there's just a couple of road bridges in Stamford.

Culdn't you be thinking of the tunnel that started the thread? That one doesn't appear to be there for any topographical reaon. It looks as though it may be there to satisfy the requirements of a landowner. The railway runs right under the road.

Ive just looked. I thought there was another tunnel to the east of the station. Its actually two road bridges very close together. The tunnel starts after that.
