I have been working on an idea for a complete redraw of bus services around the Bristol area.

This is not yet complete (So a few services are missing). These are across all operators and as if it was a blank canvas (So no complaining about number changes!)

Just want feedback/suggestions.

So here goes! (Excel document with more info, available on request)

A few things...

How do you terminate 64 services per hour at Temple Meads?

You'd use the number 3 for a service that runs twice per day?

the numbering would certainly make life much easier for the average bus user

I'm not sure swapping the 70 and 71 around would impress people much!

I think people would lament the termination of cross-city services - Gloucester Road to Bedminster etc. These aren't just useful in avoiding changing in the centre, but allow buses to terminate at the extremes rather than in unmanageable numbers at Broadmead or Temple Meads.

Build a bus interchange at temple meads as proposed by many (Including the original metrobus plans)

Broadmead also has plenty of stops!

I would use the number 3 for a service that runs twice a day, because possibly it would encourage higher ridership and that it travels in a similar direction to the 1/2, frequency is relative!

Also by having all services calling at atleast 2 of the main 3 termini (Temple Meads, Broadmead, Broad Quay) it would mitigate the need for everyone needing to change in one place.

Yes Crosscity services are nice. But!! In Bristol where traffic is a major issue, services can get delayed significantly, so this would limit disruption without the need to keep adding extra buses onto the route.

Example the Southern part of the 75/76 might not need as many additional resources to cope with traffic compared to the Northern part! I can't count how many times I have been waiting for a bus and 4 or 5 have turned up within 5 mins of one another! And this has a knock on effect for quite a while how ever much they try to tell drivers to run out of service to catch up!

People complained when the 20 was split but they dealt with it and yes the Northern part has since been basically withdrawn but that was for a very good reason. When I emailed First before it got split the main reason they didn't want to split the 20 earlier was due to how well the timetable fitted in at the time and splitting would of involved an extra bus.

I don't want to be overly negative (honest) and there are some interesting ideas. There are some personal gripes and they're just me like the renumbering of services just so they're tidy - I don't believe that service numbers are sacred (oooh, it's been the 85 since 1931....) but also don't feel like it's sensible to change for change's sake - I digress!

The issue of cross-city routes being cut will be contentious. Slicing the 75/76 etc in half and removing direct links to Southmead Hospital will get column inches a plenty in the Post!!

I don't think the idea running Keynsham routes via St Annes etc will appeal to many people either whilst other services get a greater split of stoppers and expresses.

As for the more peripheral services, I appreciate it's a bit of a wishlist. The idea of an hourly service through Wick and Tog Hill may appeal to the more exhibitionist (!) but in this straitened times, it won't happen. The 637 is a waste of space (and the 515 is only a little better) so I'd expect them probably disappear in due course. Same with the Felton and Malmesbury runs

Appreciate you've given a lot of thought to these and don't want to be completely negative. Would keep the cross city links, not be so ambitious on the peripheral routes, and try to simplify the routes (not so many variations and expresses etc). Hope you take this in the spirit it's intended

I very much like your idea of the grouping of services together; however, there are just FAR too many bus services here, particularly around the Temple Meads and Cribbs Causeway areas. I think you could probably use half of those bus route yet still achieve the same results! For example, your proposed 70-76 services, do ALL of those need to go to Temple Meads?! There are more services going there than in the city centre, yet the former is much more smaller!

Also, where do you think an interchange at Temple Meads could go? It's not exactly Ashton Court in terms of space!

Great services and great connections, but narrow them down to say 1-2 per area instead of 5-6!

To be honest when you get to it I haven't really added many extra services. (There will need to be new route to go via Charlton (Filton Airfield, and buses can't just go on an endless loop!) I have split the 1 into 1 and 2 and the 76 into 73 and 74.

At the moment the 73, 75 and 76 provide 17bph Centre - Cribbs, my idea actually reduces that to 16bph across 4 routes! So I don't think it would be "overkill".

Which is good but at the moment as it is only under three services it's not complicated. When you have five or six buses running between the same places (which you have on your proposals), that is where it starts to get confusing!

But those points aside, I like it a lot! I can picture a mixture of Streetdecks and Enviro 400s on these routes!

It's only 1 additional route of each corridor!

And as regards to Temple meads, there is the Friary and spare plots at the moment. But I think it could be achieved.

The problem with Temple Meads is that even Brunel didnt want to build a Train station there, but was forced to. Most of the people who want a bus interchange there dont actually use buses, and ignore the fact it's one of the most congested areas of Bristol! Why not the opposite approach of moving the train station to where people actually want to be!
Cardiff city council have recently decided that having one of the most perfectly located bus stations in the country (especially for those that want bus and train stations colocated) is worthless if you can flog it off for offices instead!
Nurse, my medication might be wearing off!

I agree but that's why having 3 smaller termini are of benefit, it should mean wherever you are coming from you should get to where you want in the central area, without the need for 1 big bus station, or the need for people to simply interchange at one point!

And I would change routing of buses around the Centre (before this Metrobus rubbish changes it all)

Of course, building a new bus station and modifying bus routes is a hell of a lot easier than building a new train station and new lines to link to the new station! The fact is Temple Meads is where it is and everyone has to live with that, so we may aswell make the best we can out of the situation.

And regarding Cardiff, the new bus station will still be very well located for train / bus interchange though, barely any worse compared to the old station really.

I personally like the layout at Temple Meads at the moment, and I think there is a perfect number of bus services calling there. Any more and it would just cause even more congestion than now.

Not if it was managed in a sensible way! Not at the moment where everything is funnelled through one small section of road!

Well your idea is interesting overall, freetoview33. Some of it makes sense and is a viable option, but then there's other parts of it that are completely pointless.

Personally I would keep most of the 70 and 80 series as they are currently, with the exception of 79 which would be a good idea to be renumbered as X78. The 50 series also mostly works as it is. I think renumbering something like the 90 and the A1 and maybe even the A4 would also fit into the 50 range. The current 30 and 40 ranges really don't work very well and I think that most of your plans for these work. I think the current 48/X48/49/X49/48A/47/46/X46 should all be taken out of that range and renumbered in another range, then keep 42,43,44 and 45 as is. The 30 range would be as your plan. The current 24 also doesn't work and should be renumbered in something like the 70 range maybe. X8 and X9 sort of work now as peope will notice that those services only go to Nailsea, (rather than going everywhere in the country nearly!) so I can't see much point in renumbering most of the X range, the only exception being X7, which would work better as something else, not sure what though. I would also probably renumber the current 5. That's about it really, I wouldn't really touch anything else.

Still we'll see what First decide to do. Rumour has it (think the rumour mill worker is about to hang himself after all the work!) that the 70/71 services (and I think more) will be changing again in November. Not sure how true that is though and not sure what they have planned. I suspect though it could involve some renumbering (maybe they are going to expand this Unibus brand to Bristol as well as Bath).

I can't see the 70/1 having major changes - they're just putting the branding on the Streetdecks so renumbering or "purple-isation" is extremely unlikely.

Other than numbering though!

And TheGrandWazoo I have travelled on quite a few services and have seen plenty and points along the journey so know how busy ones are/are not.

0-9: A4018 (Whiteladies)
10-19: Southmead Hospital services
20-29: North Somerset (A369, A370)
30-39: A4 (East) Bath Road
40-49: A420, A431 Two Mile Hill
50-59: A37 Wells Road
60-69: A432 Fishponds Road
70-79: A38 (North) Gloucester Road
80-89: Yate Services
90-99: A38 (South) Bridgewater Road

It would make life simpler! (But I wasn't asking about numbers just routes)

I know the main principles!

People being able to go where they want to
Matching demand (Low or High)
Simple
Serving places (But not having a long round the houses route)

Building a new bus station might be easier, building one where people don't want to go just increases the number that give up on public transport however. The current situation works as there is a very good service linking Temple Meads with the central area/Broadmead plus a number of cross city services.

Cardiff doesn't have a new bus station. There is a plan for one that's half the size of the previous one (which had already lost 20% of it's stands) but it depends on the council actually committing the money and it's just as likely in a years time that the council will say that, as the new arrangements are working so well, there is no need for a new bus station and the money can be spent on a new car park to accommodate all the people who've given up on buses.

Building a new bus station might be easier, building one where people don't want to go just increases the number that give up on public transport however. The current situation works as there is a very good service linking Temple Meads with the central area/Broadmead plus a number of cross city services.

I never said about a bus station just a few extra bus stops!

2 Long Shelters along Temple Gate (Similar to now!) one for the 30's one for 50's

At Temple Meads it self there needs to be 5 stops (Which could easy happen)

1: For Airport Flyer
2: For 70, X70, 71, 72
3: For 73, 74, 75, 76
4: For 1, 2, 3, 4
5: For 5, 6, 7, 8

It wouldn't be hard!

More will follow when I have gone through the remaining services!

Having had a bit more time to review, I'm a bit more baffled as to the thinking behind some of your more extravagant proposals. I'm not so familiar as to North Bristol. I do know the Eastern side of the city/South Gloucestershire/BaNES very well (having lived in various places) and that's why I wonder about how well you know them. In some instances, I doubt you know them at all:

31: Broadmead - Keynsham (Temple Meads - Arnos Vale - St Annes - Broomhill - then onto Keynsham, every 20 mins, single decker)

Why extend what is essentially the 1 to Keynsham. Why? Is there some great untapped market? If so, where is your justification? Why the thinking?

32: Broadmead - Keynsham (As service 57 to Stockwood, then as 636 to Keynsham, every 20 mins, single decker)

So you propose to link two services, one (57) runs a handful of times M-F built around school workings. The other (636) runs one journey 3 days a week. You're proposing a 20 min service so the number of "636" journeys increases from 3 per week to nearer 180 per week. Why?

33: Bristol Bus Station - Bath (As service 39, but running via Wellsway and the 178 loop, every 30 mins, single decker)

Assume the 178 loses Chandag? See further comments below

X34: Bristol Bus Station - Bath (As service X39, every 20 mins, double decker)

Why drop the frequency of the most popular route from 12 to 20 mins? I could see a drop to 15 but every 20? Doesn't make sense

36: Bristol Bus Station - Radstock (As 178 but avoiding Timsbury, every 60 mins, single decker)

37: Bristol Bus Station - Midsomer Norton (As 668, every 60 mins, single decker)

I'm assuming that you're trying to justify your 37 by moving Timsbury traffic their from the current 178.

Again, I'm struggling to see the justification for having another service from Keynsham to MSN. The 178 just about struggles by and, to be honest, it's really more like 2 routes Bath to Paulton and Chandag to Bristol. The middle section is fairly minimal. Also, the 668 runs once a week - again (based on a 10 hr day, 6 days a week) it goes up by a similar margin as the 636 - why? The 178 covers the current minimal trade between Keynsham and MSN - this will only dilute that AND you're removing Chandag from it?

As I've said, I'm no expert on North Bristol but recognise some of the measures proposed being sensible especially with Charlton Hayes and Filton developments.

In the areas that I do know well, I question if you've actually been on those services? The 178 barely scrapes by (have you been on it past Keynsham?) and yet you propose to remove Timsbury and Chandag and then provide an hourly service on a "sort of" parallel route that runs once a week! I can't see the logic. And the fascination with Keynsham? Why is would it be a traffic objective of anyone from Stockwood or St Annes/Broomhill? Again, I question if you've seen let alone been on the 42 when it was extended to Keynsham. Pitiful figures - 2/3 a journey.

Like others, I have the same concerns about splitting services like the cross city routes. As well as the public uproar, putting so much through Temple Meads has two issues. One is the sheer number - some bus interchange might be nice but where will it go given the pressure on parking spaces already and the rocketing value of land round there? The other is that by splitting the routes, not only do you then overlap services (increasing the PVR for those routes) but you do so across the city centre so maximising delays.

I think you perhaps need to have another look at what you're proposing and keep asking yourself why and, importantly, why not? I really don't want to be negative, but temper your ambition with a bit of pragmatism. All the best, TGW!

I know it surprisingly well!

The 31 would serve more of St Annes which is an untapped market, also it would partly replace the 36 as well! The Keynsham part is to make up for a reduction in capacity by loosing the 349 and reduction on the X39.

The 32 is part of the same reason and to make up for a reduction in services along Sturminster Road and removal of the 36.

Basically the idea of the X34 being less frequent than the X39 is now is to try and shift people on to the 33 and 34 to make them more viable (I know some people wouldn't like a slightly longer trip but at the end of the day they would just get the other services as the ultimate destination is the same! And possibly making the X34 more of a limited stop service (Especially from Keynsham - Bristol) to try and make it more of an express service!

And the reason with the 36 and 37 is I wouldn't replace the 379, (As the Wells road end would be better served by the 53.

I think there is enough room at Temple Meads to fit the bus stops in. The main issue is the changes to Temple Circus! Which will funnel all traffic through a very small bit of road!

And a lot of the thing's with the 70's calling at Temple Meads and being split were proposed by First 9 years ago anyway (I know things have changed since then) but it could easily of happened!

Also part of it is trying to make it so people have multiple places to interchange and not just Broad Quay and Nelson Street as now!

I have deeply thought about these plans (which have been In the works for years!) And I have cut it right down from my way over the top original ideas. So hope these are more realistic!

With Charlton Hayes/ Filton Keynes! Buses will need to serve it, but I don't see that diverting existing services would be sensible!

But it does basically bring back the old 77 (which someone should be happy about)
