Evening folks,

Earlier today Minister Paschal Donohoe along with David Franks CEO Iarnrod Eireann and Anne Graham CEO National Transport Authority launched the €13.4m upgrade of the Phoenix Park Tunnel line. This will allow Commuters on the Kildare to Dublin Heuston line to have the option of direct trains to Drumcondra, Connolly, Tara St, Pearse and Grand Canal Dock Stations from late 2016.

Photos of the launch event are now available at http://smu.gs/1NhOk5Z

That's great news, I look forward to it's completion - when do the contractors start?

So one does not have to walk or take the bus from Heuston to Connolly and v.v. anymore?

Why walk or take the bus when the tram stops quite close to Connolly, it's a 5 min if that.

This project will result in additional trains operating from the Kildare line (probably either Kildare or Hazelhatch). They will serve Kildare line stations to Parkwest and then run non-stop past Heuston before calling at Drumcondra, Connolly, Tara Street, Pearse and terminate at Grand Canal Dock, hourly off-peak and twice an hour at peak times.

If travelling from Heuston to Connolly then the LUAS tram will remain the best option as these trains will not serve Heuston.

Seems a bit odd that they won't serve the existing P10 which has crossover connections.

Not going north it doesn't.

Heuston will still have all the existing services.

I wonder what the additional cost would be to allow that? Seems a bit of a waste not have even the connection to Heuston available from P10. Shame really.

It must be ten years ago that the much ballyhooed Transport 21 set in motion the four tracking from my old station at Hazelhatch and Celbridge and put in a bay platform for terminating services from Dublin, which though promised at the time never happened. Perhaps it's time for at least half hourly services via either Heuston or the PPT?

A crossover and associated signalling would cost several million euro.

There really isn't any point at the moment, given we are talking about one train an hour off-peak and 2 an hour at peak.

Heuston will still have all the other existing services that go there.

P10 is 750m + away from the main station along a very windswept road. You would have to put on a connecting bus to serve it.

Until such time as service levels increase beyond those levels, I think it would be a waste of resources.
