I don't disagree that a railway line and service would be attractive but what's wrong with the current bus service? Or a taxi from the main line? We're talking just over 3 miles to Plye just over 7 to Bridgend. Lots of places would love that.

There are many seaside resorts around the country that lost their railway services in the 1960s because the peak summer traffic for about 3 months was insufficient to balance the much lower traffic levels of the other 9 months of the year.

You're right, a very long list, I can think of Norfolk destinations such as Hunstanton and of course the "withered arm" in Devon and Cornwall

We spent a holiday touring South Wales, based there at Porthcawl, last year and in the little town museum, there was a section on Porthcawl station with a large-scale model of a locomotive and coaches.

It looks as if it was a shelter type of extension to the tunnel, but why it was put there, I've no idea.

Looks a bit of a heavyweight structure (apart from the smoke hood laid over the beams). My guess is that the cutting walls were starting to push in (as they have a tendency to do with steep sides, as here), and the fix has been to put steel girders across the top to restrain movement.

The junction at Roade, where the Northampton line leaves the WCML, has long had a similar framework (in fact much more substantial) over the descending Northampton tracks for this reason.

You could be right at that.

Although I've not seen the one at Roade, I think I've seen something similar elsewhere - but not Porthcawl!
