Out of interest what do you see from the front end at night? Do the headlamps illuminate a significant distance - they certainly never look that bright.
It's not what you see, it's the fact you are driving over a route so re-familiarising yourself with speeds, signals, routings etc
Route retention trips arnt about being able to see all the scenery etc, plus when you sign a route you need to know it well enough to drive at night and in thick fog when you can't see 6' infront of the train. So any landmarks invisible at night will be pretty useless.
Train lights don't really illuminate the line ahead, they are there to make the train visible to others and to illuminate reflective trackside signs.
