What are people's thoughts on this? BBC article

BBC said:
Labour leadership contender Jeremy Corbyn has said he would consider women-only rail carriages to help stem a rise in assaults on public transport.

Mr Corbyn says he will consult women on the suggestion.

The Independent says he will also call for a 24-hour hotline for reporting harassment and assault.
It comes after British Transport Police (BTP) figures suggested sex offences on trains and at stations had risen by 25% to record levels.

Mr Corbyn said: "My intention would be to make public transport safer for everyone from the train platform, to the bus stop to on the mode of transport itself.

"However, I would consult with women and open it up to hear their views on whether women-only carriages would be welcome - and also if piloting this at times and [on] modes of transport where harassment is reported most frequently would be of interest."

Would work a treat on a 2 car unit! In all seriousness, assault of any kind is not good, but I think it is a wider societal issue that needs to be tackled. What next, segregated pubs?

Ridiculous idea if you ask me, I suspect this rise is due in no small part to more women reporting such incidents? More BTP officers on trains, particularly in the evening, would be of far more use.

Load of b*ll*x. No capacity for this, and who will police it?

Silly thing to say.

And it would require a change in the law to permit sex discrimination in favour of women.

What about single carriage trains on some lines? (eg. Bedford to Bletchley) or the through carriages on the London Overground and some of the newer London Underground trains.

This proposal is a load of politically correct b******t, and perhaps this thread should be renamed "Jeremy Corbyn will consider...." anything in order to get a few more votes in the Labour leadership election.

It would be interesting to hear what some of our female forum members think.

My mother commuted to school on the Central Line in the 1960s, and to this day remembers and talks about the disgusting on-train behaviour of some 'gentlemen'.

It might also be more of a danger to women.

If there were women only carriages, then all the undesirable characters would know exactly where to go.

The best defence when travelling alone, for both men and women, is safety in numbers.

clearly the alpha male no longer has a place in society

I worked at Vodafone in Germany and their car park's first 2 floors were women only. They all had extra wide bays :D

The sad thing is, 50 years later and the behaviour of some men is still a genuine problem. I have many female friends who feel they have to be on guard against such things whenever on public transport. It's a sad thing that female-only carriages even need to be considered in this day and age. Leaving aside the obvious impracticalities of such a policy actually being introduced and enforced, the problem lies with the behaviour of some men: if that behaviour changes the problem goes away.

Back in the days of non-gangway compartment stock, didn't there use to be "Ladies only" compartments? Non-gangway and non-corridor compartments were on their way out by the late 1960s. I wonder when the last "Ladies only" compartment was removed. It's likely to have been against sex discrimination legislation, which was already up and running in the 1970s.

I agree, it's simply not a feasible solution to a problem that we all know exists.

However, there are more problems with anti social behaviour than male on female, and we mustn't forget that either.

A proper solution would address the causes of poor behaviour, and if I had my way, would properly punish those responsible!

It wouldn't work because of the wonderful thing called the Human Rights Act meaning in short "No discrimination – everyone’s rights are equal. You should not be treated unfairly – because, for example, of your gender, race, sexuality, religion or age" therefore if he did do this, there would be a good case to bring against his Govt because the applicant making the case would be able to say that because they are male they are being treated unfairly from accessing these coaches and on the other hand they could say because they are female they are being treated unfairly from accessing these coaches.

If he ever came to Govt and enact that policy, it wouldn't last 5 minutes in a court of law before being thrown out.

It's just bluster and very bad advice from his advisers.

There are so many practical obstacles tot his ever happening! We've seen several in this thread already and I'm sure there are plenty more.

Mr Corbyn has made himself look very silly with this.

Unless he's proposing a huge increase in the volume of rolling stock I can't see it working either, except maybe on Intercity services to/from London. How would it work on the Stourbridge shuttle? Ban men from boarding if a woman wishes to travel?

He doesn't mention having a First class women only coach. Is this because First class travelers are less abusive? If this is the reason then why not bring back 3rd class which would encourage abusive people (often people with less money to spare) to sit there instead? This would leave 1st and Standard free from these abusive people. Just a thought.

oooooooooooooooh i see a nice case before the ECHR

Why should I, as a man, be discriminated against on the basis of my sex. What if i am undergoing gender reassignment or simply consider my self to be a woman.

this could be fun. ;)

Having been on a train where a number of well off people (both male and female) were travelling to horse racing last Saturday trying to get drunk on the way I'm not sure I'd agree that the problems would be confined to 3rd class if it was reintroduced.

Whilst there are probably insurmountable difficulties in such a scheme, I find it refreshing that Corbyn has raised the idea openly, and said it's open to consultation.

Makes a refreshing change from lying about Weapons of Mass Destruction (Blair), reneging on student fee policies (Clegg) or the ethnic cleansing by starvation of the disadvantaged (Duncan Smith)

More power to his elbow...

I think it could be argued allowing a woman in the army to sit in a segregated section for safety but not allowing a man with a social anxiety disorder to be segregated could be a breach of the Equalities Act.

I'm sure that one of his strategies is to appear different enough to appeal to those who are fed up the usual stuff coming from the more mainstream politicians.

This one has backfired, though.

Number 1 in 1051 stupid ideas from Corbyn before the next election, are the Labour party really crazy enough to elect him leader apparently so.

His policies aside I will apply my own form of discrimination although I'm not generally ageist but if he wins the next election he would be 71 that's too old for that job in my book especially when most people are supposed to retire at 66 from 2020. Hell I'm 54 and some days I feel old and out of touch yet apparently somebody considerably older should be prime minister!

A lone woman travelling in a female only carriage with a group of women on a hen night for company would probably find the experience to be less than pleasant.

As Jeremy Corbyn has been accused of alleged links to people accused of Islamic Extremism I must admit it does make me start to wonder if there is a link between suggesting women only segregated coaches and that although I highly doubt there is a link between the two.

Seriously though women only coaches would never work, firstly they would have to be at the very front/back of the train to prevent men for walking through, where do you draw the line of what is and isn't acceptable i.e. can a mother and her 10 year old son use the coach?.

The place where I get my hair cut in Manchester has a men only policy that the bloke who owns it says it to create an environment where men can feel men. If they have women only coaches then they should have men only coaches. :D

I'm surprised about the outrage regarding the legality of this. There are many, many situations in modern Britain where facilities are provided for one gender to the detriment of the other. Very often in the favour of women, usually to encourage them in a situation whereby they would otherwise feel uncomfortable. There is a chain of women-only gyms, for instance, and a well-known series of 5k races which excludes men completely. There are still nightclubs which will welcome groups of women, but not groups of men.

Baby-changing facilities are an interesting one. They are often located in female toilet areas and those are sometimes used for discreete breastfeeding. When my boy was that age, I sometimes had to get staff to go in, check that the coast was clear, and stand guard outside to warn ladies that there was a man in there.

I'm unsure about the idea of women-only carriages because it doesn't deal with the wider issue of why these women should feel vulnerable in the first place, and without police enforcement they will only serve as an easy place for predatory men to find scared women.

where men can feel men.

Plenty of bars in Manchester where you can do that ;)

Something key to note from the article

Labour leadership contender Jeremy Corbyn has said he would consider women-only rail carriages to help stem a rise in assaults on public transport.

Mr Corbyn says he will consult women on the suggestion.
...
Rail minister Claire Perry suggested introducing women-only carriages in September last year.

So basically he's made a suggestion that the current Conservative rail minister has already made. He's also said he'll consult on it not that he will do it.
