I am hoping to go to the football at Colwyn Bay this Saturday (29th) and cant seem to beat the off peak return price of £61.55. That is for one adult and one child with a family railcard. Can anyone suggest something cheaper?

I am sure there is a fare out there somewhere but although i can find cheap legs i cant get a decent price for the whole journey! Can anyone help? I wonder if Stafford being shut is messing thing up? - none of my usual, admittedly cack handed, splits are working

I want to arrive about 12/13:00 and leave around 17:00 and am easy about routes although with a 9 year old in tow I don't want to be back at stupid o clock

thanks

The Rail Easy Split Ticketting website, which I usually find to be the best, has no suggestions.

I think that the reduced London Midland service on Saturday is affecting your options. I'm not sure it's worth it for the £9 saving and the rushed departure from Colwyn Bay however you could try:

Off-Peak Return LM Only Milton Keynes to Crewe £28.05
Off-Peak Day Return Crewe to Colwyn Bay £23.70

Out
Milton Keynes 09:19 - 11:28 Crewe
Crewe 11:49 - 12:13 Chester
Chester 12:23 - 13:07 Colwyn Bay

Return
Colwyn Bay 16:59 - 17:49 Chester
Chester 17:55 - 18:18 Crewe
Crewe 19:02 - 21:07 Northampton
Northampton 21:07 - 21:45 Milton Keynes

In fact looking at Colwyn Bay's ground on Google Maps I don't think that's really doable without leaving early, but the 16:59 is the latest you can leave in order to take advantage of splitting at Crewe.

thanks - I cant safely say we could make the 16:59 so may have to go for the open ticket - it isn't worth £9 odd of risk.

I was working on a return via Warrington or Manchester

EDIT - IF i go for the off peak return what is the latest i could buy this ticket?

As a rule, non-promotional walk-up tickets have no time limit associated with purchase at all!

A West Midlands Day Ranger will get you cheaply from Northampton to Crewe or Gobowen and back (adult with railcard £16.35).
You can then get Day Returns MKC-Northampton and Gobowen/Crewe-Colwyn Bay.
That might work out cheaper overall.
It would be dead easy with the 0910 Euston-Holyhead or the hourly Chesters, but they are only starting from Crewe this weekend, the standard default whenever they dig up the WCML south of Crewe.
Timewise, ATW Birmingham International-Holyhead (via Gobowen) might be the safest bet. Slow but sure...
Summer Saturday on the North Wales coast is not the best time to look for cheap advances or empty seats.
