I went to North Norfolk Railway because I want to meet the Y14 in new navy blue, When I saw a gentlemen took sign 'Y14' off on board, I though it is something seem to be wrong and I ask him 'is the Y14 out of service?' He said yes a trouble with steam valve just found early in the morning.
But to their facebook seem useless to me never update a little important info like train is not going to run something like that would help me or other person to know.
I have waste my trip to there but I went on Bure Valley railway instead was a fantastic day.

To be fair any locomotive can fail at any time of the day for a variety of reasons... If you followed any of the NNR's postings you'd know that since return from Rileys overhaul she has been plagued with problems [MY OPINION ONLY].

A lot of us, including those who contributed serious ££££ to her restoration, are a little frustrated at not being able to see her running. But it happens and she's 100+ year old machine.

Frustrating I agree, but the B12 was out along with 2 other steam loco's to play with!

Bure valley is quiet a nice line - went there for the gala recently and was quiet impressed at the performance of such little engines!

Hmmm, the same Rileys who're repairing the notoriously unreliable (in recent years) 4472/60103? This could be interesting!

How can you say 4472 is unreliable? When it was in ticket it was a regular performer. The only reason it's taken so long to complete this overhaul is that the engine has been completely thrashed and has required extensive rebuilding the NRM didn't envisage doing.

Maybe I'm wrong then; I just remember the period around the time the NRM first bought her when she was still mainlined - I seem to remember her having fairly regular problems and being pulled from various planned appearances.

Yes, she wasn't in good shape when she was purchased, which is why she was withdrawn early. Various issues were involved, such as her previous owner & engineers trying to get Class 8 performance out of a Class 7 chassis by, inter alia, using a higher pressure (and heavier) A4 boiler. This almost certainly led to the chassis cracking problems.

The thing is,had she not been bought by the NRM then there was a very good chance that she would have gone abroad. This would have been a Bad Thing. Remember, she has her place in history - first authenticated 100mph run, holder of the longest non-stop trip for steam in the world, she's travelled all round the world etc etc.

Makes sense. I knew she'd been carrying an A4 boiler but I hadn't realised that the consequences were so severe.

Someone remind me where they got the correct boiler from? It's not a new-build is it?

Absolutely agree; it's only right that she's a part of the National Collection, and whilst I wouldn't have moaned if they'd stuffed and mounted her, it's nice that she'll run again. My comment was simply that if the Y14 was unreliable after a Riley overhaul, FS, with its recent history of issues, probably had no chance!

Realistically though, I think she'll be a fine runner once again.

This thread is about the Y14 not the green disaster area which is the A4 looking like an A3 clone.
