Could someone let me know if you can upgrade to the Arriva Trains Business service if travelling on a standard class advance ticket?

Which is what the OP is enquiring about.

Can see no reason why not, and nothing on the Arriva Wales site forbids it.

The official answer is "no". You will need to excess to a Standard Class walk-on fare first.

First Class Upgrade – Arriva Trains Wales

Upgrades are available to customers travelling on standard class walk up tickets only. This will entitle the holder to the full complimentary on-board service offer.

Passengers holding Standard Class Advance tickets will firstly need to upgrade to the equivalent walk up single ticket before they can purchase the upgrade.

...

That said, I have never been refused an upgrade on a Standard Class Advance ticket, nor have any other forum member I am aware of.

Not sure where you have got that from. But I'm told that when it changed to "business class" they officially removed that restriction. Though I will check with a couple of guards I know.

For what it's worth, no guard is ever not going to sell one just because you have a standard class advance. Too much commission to lose out on!

Would appreciate any checking you can do.

You can present your ticket and purchase your upgrade from a ticket office in advance if you can find one that knows how to do it!

And if not, all the ticket office needs to do is type in your origin and destination and choose the obvious Arriva Trains Wales Only routed (think it is the only one with that particular routing, in a column of its' own!) Business Zone Upgrade ;)

Are we sure the op isn't referring to http://www.chilternrailways.co.uk/mainline as that was my first thought when I saw the thread.
