BBC News reporting that the launch of the night tube is being deferred:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-england-london-33752245

The launch of Night Time Tube services in London is to be delayed.

The 24-hour weekend service on the Jubilee, Victoria and most of the Piccadilly, Central and Northern lines was due to start on 12 September.

It’s being deferred until later in the autumn to allow further discussions with unions about rosters.

Transport for London (TfL) says the decision is to enable the successful conclusion of negotiations.

No new date given, aside for an objective to deliver sometime this Autumn.

It's been sent out in LU staff emails, and has met with absolutely zero surprise other than that we got an email about it. Night Tube itself we first heard about from the media, rather than having anyone asking us beforehand "what will be the impact of running all your lines all night?"

In part it would have been because the rosters needed to allow night tube to happen weren't accepted by the unions/were rejected by staff, and they now can't introduce a roster in time to meet the original dates.

Lost somewhere within Bank-Monument tube station,
Judging by the recent comments from some union members, it seems a deal is close to being agreed. I'd reckon that the Night Tube will start running in early/mid October, with a deal being agreed just before the proposed strike action in early September.

Or at least I hope it does, otherwise my 24 Hours of London trip in November/December is a non-starter. :(

TfL just sent out an email to all their mailing list subscribers, with almost identical wording to the BBC quote in the OP.

Yes, since making my OP earlier this morning I've done my shift at work and found said email when I got home.

It's not all the lines though is it?

I had to Google that. Just Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly?

Yes, on LU the lines are grouped as departments, in a way:

BCV (Bakerloo Central Victoria)
JNP (Jubilee Northern Piccadilly)
SSR (Sub Surface Railway)

...and to clarify, Night Tube is (Was!) for the Central, Jubilee, Northern (Charing X branch), Piccadilly and Victoria lines, although not all parts of all lines are/were to be served.

SSR lines to follow after re-signalling (~2018).

My apologies. Yes, I signed with Tube Lines, and by the time I started work it was part of London Underground again.

LU, as mentioned, is split into three groups: BCV (Bakerloo, Central, Victoria (plus W&C)), JNP and SSL (or SSR or Subsurface or whatever they want to call themselves this week). It's an outcome from the old PPP contracts - Amey, as Tube Lines, got JNP; Metronet got BCV and SSL.

Within JNP it's further split into AP (asset performance) and COO (chief operating office - essentially anything which isn't asset-related, such as staff errors, passenger actions, third party issues, etc).

Initial results of the night bus consultation have been published today too, with a few service changes still taking place on 12 September.

The only difference I can see between the original consultation and the changes listed here is that the proposed cut in Fri/Sat night N1 service to Thamesmead has been scrapped, which seems right as Woolwich and Thamesmead are not going to benefit from any nighttime rail services in the near or medium term.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
The proposed cuts in some Friday and Saturday night bus routes to coincide with the intro of tube services have been put on indefinite hold, regardless of if or when the Night Tube goes ahead.
Only my surmisal, but I'd think two reasons:-
Logistical- the Night Tube might suddenly happen with only two or three weeks warning, and the bus companies actually running those buses would need more notice than that with drivers' rosters, etc. Also, there'd be an enormous number of bus stops that would need new panel timetables. TfL have always wanted people waiting for all-night buses to know exactly when a bus can be expected regardless of new technology.
The second reason is, I suspect, a realisation that it may take a few weeks of the Night Tube for travel patterns to emerge, and it may be that some of those bus services will be as busy as before, whereas others may be less busy than predicted and may face pruning; maybe better to see first before reacting.

Don't be surprised if you don't see night tube until next year. In theory if there was an agreement within the next week, the earliest night tube could come in would be around eight weeks from the date of the agreement.

I always assumed the September date was a date that was ideally placed for a likely slippage.

There is nothing special about September, you've already missed the summer, but there is enough time for a few slippages before the Christmas party season starts.

Today would have been the start of a new timetable, so Sept 12th would have been the first weekend. The Rugby World Cup is also being held in this country this month!

Underground services will still be running after the matches played in London. The Night tube would have allowed Londoners to get to evening matches outside of London and then get home after the game but will many Londoners be heading to games in other places apart from maybe Milton Keynes and Brighton?

No idea - have these other places got those new fangled places called hotels?

Unions are apparently talking about night services starting in March.

yes, March is what my RMT rep told me yesterday, is the aim for date for night tube, along with all the other changes related to the company's 'fit for the future' programme. it will still be open 24/7 for new years eve though as usual.

So why is the tube "deferred" but the DLR is 2021? Doesn't the DLR have newer infrastructure to support this over, say, the piccadilly?

DLR is franchised and is up in 2021. IIRC only renewed at the start of this year but the night tube had already been announced by then, so why night running wasn't put in as part of the agreement I don't know.

The all night tube service in London will not be introduced this year after talks broke up without agreement

DiamondGeezer noted that the planned closures were massaged so that they had zero effect on Night Tube until 2016. I'm curious to know whether the plans have now been changed to take advantage of not running Night Tube yet.
