Do you need a mechanical qualification for Trainee roles?

Hi guys,

I am just wondering if anyone can shed some light on to whether or not most TOC's insist on a mechanical qualification in order to apply?
I have seen a few advertisements that have suggested it but wondered if someone in the know or whom has been applying a lot has any ideas?

Kind regards.

Trainee what, exactly? Catering assistant, maintenance, driver?

Assuming driver, could well be but I doubt it and for the companies I've applied with its never been the case.

Absolutely no requirement for any mechanical quals if applying for Traincrew roles.....rest assured, and good luck.

Although as a a caveat to that, the exception may well be when considering Train Maintainer/ On Track Machine type jobs, but I'll leave that to them to fill you in.

In that case should be fine, obviously a good mechanical understanding always helps, but you shouldn't need anything specific :)

This is from London Midlands' advertisements for trainee drivers:

"You must be at least 21 years of age, and able to demonstrate the following:

Good mechanical aptitude: a recognised technical qualification or time-served apprenticeship will be an advantage. "

It is not necessary but advantageous. Many who get through do not have this.

However if you do have a mechanical background or a qualification you stand a better chance of success.

TDK you seem to make a habit of misreading people's comments and jumping right on the band wagon like you did to my post.

John, thanks for the advice. ;)

What makes london midland require it when others don't?

It doesn't actually say it is a requirement as quoted it is an advantage as is customer service experience etc.
